We can elect red meat conservatives in some congressional districts, but not in battleground state wide elections.
Ditto for the national election. One need only read the comments here that decry President Bush for not being a "real" conservative, yet one need only check Southack's page to see of all his "real" conservative accomplishments.

You've got your history all wrong. The public turned against Vietnam during the Johnson administration. Nixon was voted in to clean it up. If your concern is ensuring support for our warfighters, this election result must be devastating to you. Anyone who participated in putting democrats into Congress just broadcast to the world that the country no longer supports our war in Iraq.

I live in a purple state & it just went more blue. I can't remember the last time a conservative won a statewide race here & things are looking down instead of up.
