The RPV selected Jerry Kilgore very early on. Kilgore was an excellent AG but not necessarily the right candidate for governor. I'd have to disagree there. I announced the "Kilgore for Governor 2005" campaign on FR the day after Horseface was elected.
Kilgore would have been an excellent Governor. But he ~turned into~ a lousy candidate.

I agree Jerry was the heir apparent. We were told up our way after 'horse-face' was elected that there'd be no primary in 2005 and that the party had closed ranks around Jerry. I agree he'd have been a great governor. As a candidate, he just didn't have broad enough appeal, unfortunately. And we certainly agree on the inability of his campaign to connect with voters. It appears to be what happened with Mark Earley's campaign. I sure hope we shake things up for next time. In the meantime --
