Kilgore duels Kaine in hunt for sportsmen

VINTON -- A shootout for gun owners' votes escalated yesterday when Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore announced the creation of a "Sportsmen for Kilgore" coalition that will counter a similar group working for his Democratic rival.

Gov. Mark R. Warner's decision to forgo a challenge to U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., surprised few observers and puts pressure on him to recruit a good challenger to the presidential wannabe.

Yesterday Governor Mark Warner officially said No to a race against Senator George Allen next year. Most analysts interpret his decision as a Yes to a national campaign in 2008.
