I'm glad I found this post, since you are responding to one of mine own specifically about 6 months back.

No matter what - Heath Shuler has one major negative he can not run away from. He'll be voting for San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi as house leader.

As someone who supports the constitution, and especially the 2nd amendment - that is unacceptable.

As an ex-football player and ex-(and future when I have time)coach myself - I respect Heath for his past, but I can not get past his vote for speaker - Pelosi. That's one scary scenario...

I appreciate your concerns, but I think we are safe on the second amendment issues with Schuler. He's an avid hunter and proponent of responsible gun ownership and use. What I think is interesting, however, is that so many who indicate that the Democratic party is out to "take our guns" are supporting people who are willing to allow our president to order martial law. What do you think all that money to the pentagon to fight BIRD FLU was for? (Surely we can't believe they plan to shoot birds out of the sky with all that money.) Upon doing a bit of digging, I find that it is to enforce martial law....

Amendment II says, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Our founding fathers didn't have hunting in mind. Rather, they wanted citizens to be prepared to defend themselves from their own governments if it should be necessary. They had good reason to include that amendment. Check it out and see what our president and his circle have in mind to "protect" us should the bird flu hit the nation. It's frightening, really.

In actuality, I really don't think I'm going to have to protect myself and my rights from the likes of Pelosi. Cheney, Rumsfield, and other Rove-esque figures alarm me much more. We cannot afford to give up any more constitutional rights.
