Buford withdrew from the nomination fight for the special election because, he said, McConnell's influence made any challenge unlikely to succeed. That's also a bunch of nonsense. Buford was planning to challenge in the primary even if Kerr (or whoever the candidate had ended up being) had won the Congressional seat.
