WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Single mothers without work and welfare income reached its highest level in recorded history, according to data released today by the Children's Defense Fund. The number of jobless women with children not receiving welfare rose by 188,000 in one year, leaving a record three quarters of all single mothers without public assistance and causing a sudden surge in extreme child poverty. Single parents and their children entered the 2001 recession with less protection from a failing economy than in any recession in the last 20 years. Congress is working on a revision of the 1996 welfare reform law set to expire in September that could make the problem worse.

No tolerance for public religion, but it's okay for the taxpayer to foot this bill, with us largely through the lack of values.

Anybody thats been around and was politically concious in 1965 understands one thing: welfare breeds poverty.

Where are the fathers? As usual, they aren't even mentioned.

If Oprah, the neocommunists and the democrats stoped depicting "single moms" as great people and the status as one to be admired, this could have been one of those issues that was cured and went away. We are forever seeing some fat broad with a plastic bottle of water or diet soda introduced as a "single mom" and watching the crowd cheer like the bimbo actually accomplished something worthwhile like graduating from a decent school with a master's degree in engineering.

If this outfit spent more time handing out rubbers to fat girls instead of demanding that they be given more resources after the first, second, or third kid, we all would be better off.

I'm sorry, but I've seen this welfare reform up close and it works, it really works.

I know a young girl who got pregnant before graduating from high school and tried to put the baby up for adoption, but the young man refused to give permission.
She finished school and had the baby on welfare. After the baby was born she entered the pre-work program where they gave her child care instruction as well as career counselling. They even helped her find a job. She has been working now for over a year and is off of welfare, except a day care subsidy. She is now building one those self=help houses which will be finished in December. She is only 21.

This girl had some real obstacles to overcome in her homelife and would have been no where if she hadn't gotten into the welfare system, by getting pregnant.

There needs to be much more welfare reform --- and more serious reform. In this area about 40% of babies are born to single young mothers and it's not unusual to see high school girls with 2 or 3 babies, they're in school because it gives them free breakfast, lunch, and free daycare but most have no goals except to try and get another "boyfriend".

There are more reliable methods of birth control ---- surgical, and those patches that last several months. Self control seems to be completely out of the question, these girls often don't have a clue who the father might have been. Even if they know, he's long gone and is producing more babies with his new girlfriends and he's never going to pay for the support of any.

Heck, my wife and I helped pay for the college education of three of our four children. It took them years after college - while paying off college loans - before they could afford their own home. I'd say the welfare system worked very well for this 21 year old single mom.

How 'bout, NO welfare checks until the welfare mom NAMES the deadbeat dad ?? The state could then pursue the dad to support his kid. (instead of the US taxpayers).

Those high school girls will have to get a job when they graduate. The career classes are mandatory and if they don't take advantage and find a job, the welfare will run out.

How about a DNA test to make sure that the sucker she names is the actual father.

Of course we need to make sure the mom names the REAL dad. (I thought that (DNA)...I just didn't type it)

I don't trust an organization in which Hillary has had ties for over 20 years. She chaired the board of this outfit 1986-1989.

The link to the pdf for the stats isn't valid.
why aren't these moms on or eligible for welfare ?
why aren't the kids on or eligible for Kids Care ?

Without more background, this article makes no sense.

Thanx....

Here's what I get from this:

The reasons for these numbers are:

1. The welfare benefits period has come to an end. More than 93,000 families had had their cases closed due to time limits by December 2001
2. Someone who has worked only 1/3 rd of the year is considered 1/3rd of a person without work/welfare.
3. Women don't know they are eligible for welfare.
4. Those eleigible for welfare must work. If they stop working they stop getting welfare. Failure to comply with work rules and related requirements resulted in more than 500,000 families losing assistance from 1997 to 1999.

This organization admits it connot say with any certainty which of the above reasons causes what percent of the number they came up with. How, then, could they come up with a number in the first place ?

the welfare will run out.

I doubt the welfare runs out. Maybe TANF, but the food stamps, Medicaid, free job training, Head start, CHIP, SSI, housing assistance, free babysitting, and so on just go on. There are many pregnant girls in the high school here --- pregnant already in the 9th grade, I very much doubt that the welfare class really believes it ever needs to work. Welfare rates along the border are over 50% in many areas, if you go into many of the grocery stores, you see many young mothers with 4 or 5 children and another on the way --- all using food stamps. Often you'll find yourself the only person not using food stamps. Welfare caseloads are actually growing if you combine all the various welfare programs.
