What OS are you using? I tried to install a CDRW in a machine using Win 98 to replace an inoperable CD and it couldn't be done because you need an operable CD drive to install the remote drive with Win 98. Newer versions of MS have the drivers available on the Web, but not Win 98. I had to take the machine in for repair and spend twice as much as the remote drive to have them fix it propoerly.

It's a CD/ROM that, when run, will format the HD and basically start your machine over from scratch.

I've just realized that perhaps since the D: is the master and E: is the slave, that for the recovery it may want to use the master...?

Unfortunately, the D: makes the machine crash.

Perhaps I should uninstall the new drive and set the original CD back to master and try again?

Go into the BIOS and switch the Master to the Slave and visa-versa.

forgot to add... I had a similar problem with XP. I have a CDRom and RW drive. I cannot copy from the rom to the RW.

You must boot the computer with the recovery cd. If the recovery cd is not bootable, then you have a floppy that also goes with that recovery cd.

If your machine is not set to boot from a cd, you must press F2 or DEL to enter the setup screen when you first start the computer and change the BOOT SEQUENCE to add the cd drive to the boot list and then make sure it checks the cd drive before the hard disk.

Once you recover your computer, use the driver cd for the network card and then install the writer software for the cdrw. The cdrw will work as a cd only until you install the writer software.

when I try a copy it says to insert the CD even though it's already there. I've taken it to a computer repair place and they said they think it's my rom drive itself. they were guessing... I think, unless they tried another rom in it.

forgot to add... it works as a standalone rom for playing CDs

I thought to change the master to slave and vice versa would require two steps.

1. Switch the drives' positions on the cable from the Motherboard (or Drive Control Card in an older machine).

2. Change the jumpers on the back of the drives so that each knows whether it is the Slave or the Master.

P.S. I the case of multiple CD Drives, I believe that they should be designated as Secondary (this is a second cable from the motherboard), whereas the Hard Drives would be the Primary Master and Slave if you have two of those.
