Purple highlights definitely made my hair look better than just blonde. My mom is going to have a cow. She didn't believe me when I told her what I was doing.

It's hard to get the color to really show well with this lighting but the last pic shows the color best.

Get more direct lighting. With the digital camera put an unshaded 100 Watt bulb over the photographers right shoulder and you should look directly at the camera or the opposite side of the photographer. Shot at 3 to 5 feet.
