is the .223 a typical 'sniper' round?

I just ran across something I had never heard of before: The Russians, during the Cold War, developed something called the Closed Circuit round. It had a tiny bolt inside the shell to kick the round out, and an insignificant amount of gunpowder was all that was needed to drive that miniature bolt. Usually they had to be tapered casings. They were first produced in 7.62, but eventually were produced in all major calibers. They were classified weaponry in the Soviet Union, and were a much lighter load because they dont need as much powder -- the gas pressure never leaves the shell. Its just enough charge to send the round out at 900 fps. The only sound heard is the click of the hammer and the pling of the ejected casing, and the whining whoosh of the round downrange.

You're kidding right? Have you ever shot this rifle? Call me a wimp but I wouldn't shoot a 7mag. It would take me too long to cure the resulting flinch. 308 Win recoil and muzzle blast are mild by comparison.

Shot this rifle many times. It has a recoil pad on the stock.

They're just better guns out there now.
I have four Garands in different configurations but it's not the first one I would pick up. If you have a good one they are accurate and reliable. If you don't, the clip can eject before all the rounds are fired, the gas cylinder can loosen until your shots start stringing horizonally, the rear sight can loosen so every shot can go higher, the operating rod can be bent and effect accuracy and only eight rounds and you can't top off. I can put a scope on mine with a mount that I made but it's a problem to put on and take off because you have to remove the rear sight.
Go to a High Power match and you'll notice that eventually people start to move up to different rifles.
I love my Garands and have no desire to sell them.

While you are shooting your pistol at me at 100 yards

If I had to choose pistol versus rifle at any range for serious general purpose, rifle would be my choice. I enjoy pistol-shooting at 100 yards and up, it's a hobby. At longer ranges, pistol-shooting, like bow and arrow, is a talent. I wouldn't probably be shooting at you anyway.
