Let me just toss something into the mix here. The talk about Elizabeth and her abductor spending time in a closed bathroom before leaving the house caused me to wonder if perhaps something had been done to alter her appearance before leaving the house. I'm sure that if this had been the case, whatever was done then would have had to be quick......but what about since then? How many people would recognize an Elizabeth Smart with short dark hair, heavy make-up, funky clothes, etc? If Elizabeth is out there (and I hope that she is!) I doubt that she would look like she did in any of the pictures that we've seen.
This is the first I've heard of this. I wonder if it's factual or just bad journalism.
If she is dead, then there are in beautiful Utah, many remote areas that could house a buried body, where people could walk right by and miss it.(Chandra Levy, for example in the Park)
If she is alive, it was a consorted effort amoung PEOPLE to co-operate in the hiding. So far, everyone has to agree with that.(I think)..or...a remote possibility that one individual could still have her...though I , personally don't believe that is possible, unless that ONE PERSON, had no friends, relatives, neighbors, co-workers who would notice he wasn't at work, or friends, ralatives, neighbors who would notice a differnt pattern about this person. For example if it was one person, would he/she take her shopping for food. If he/she was a relative, would they come over to the place where he/she lived. That person, would have to hide her alive somewhere. Could that be done? Yes...is it likely? No.
WHAT DO I KNOW SO FAR?
The entire Ed Smart family, was in the house, sleeping
Recci, according to his wife was in bed sleeping
This million $ + home, did not have the burglary system on.
We were told the perp MAY have entered through a screen window in the kitchen (later to be discounted, and also questioned because the screen was tall, but very narrow.
He/she had to go to the house unseen, take a chance that the alarm was not set
He/she had to know where Elizabeth was.
There was a witness to this abduction (?)
There was no screaming
There were reports later hushed up about a BASEMENT BEDROOM
Reports about a garage door left open as the family rushed to a recital that they missed, but got the award at the end.
The younger sister saw the perp (man)..(what woman would have hairy arms?)
She was able to discribe what he was wearing
She was told if she talked or made noise, Elizabeth would die
Girl waits 2 hours before going to her parents room.
Perp is kind to Elizabeth and allows her to put on canvas tennis shoes
Elizabeth does not scream or run
They exit the house quietly on foot, out the door.(supposidly)
There is not a car in the immediate area..they apparently walk.
9 yr. old waits approximately 2 hours (!)to go to parents bedroom and tell them what happened.
Father gets up, goes to the girls shared bedroom and cannot find his daughter.
Calls family members, calls 911, runs outside to neighbors telling them "they" got Elizabeth and tells them to check their kids
Many family members and some neighbors enter the Smart home and are there when the police arrive.
Now, the other person, so far, in this story is the only TOP suspect, Richard Recci, a career criminal, recently married, living in the Trailer Park with his wife and step son. He was employed by Mr. Smart one year before the abduction (?) in which he stole from the property, but it was not known until THIS TIME of the incident that he did steal, he confesses to police in interogation that he in fact DID steal from the Smart family when he worked there. WHAT DO WE KNOW OF THAT NIGHT WITH HIM? The only one we have heard from is his wife on television. What did she say?
They were watching t.v. and he and she went to bed around 10:00 - 10:30.
He went to sleep, and she is a night owl, and stayed in the bed watching t.v.until about 1:00 - 1:30.
He was sound asleep beside her when she fell asleep
He sometimes gets up to use the bathroom in the night
She does not remember him doing so
They wake up at 6:00 - 6:30, and get up to make coffee and have a cigarette
They turn on the t.v.
They have local t.v. on from Salt Lake city, and hear that there has been an abdustion of Elizabeth Smart.
Richard knows who she is
He goes outside after that, and trys to repair a hole under his next door neighbors trailer where cats have dug under
Talks to neighbor.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO BELIEVE IF RICHARD TOOK ELIZABETH?
Richard waits for his wife to fall asleep.
He has this planned
or...He decides on the spur of the moment (unlikely)
He gets up, gets dressed quietly as to not wake his wife.
Goes outside and gets into his car which makes noise that could wake up neighbors, as the trailers are very close together
Drives to the Smart home which I believe someone said is one hour away.
Giving time for wife to fall asleep from 1:30, dressing, leaving in car..figure it is after 2:00 a.m.
3:00 a.m. arrives at Smarts.
Parks car in area as to not be seen
walks to house not being seen by neighbors
Does not know if alarm is set
Has to enter the home anyhow
Gets in house (don't know how)
Does not steal anything but goes to take Elizabeth
Is she is basement bedroom?..or..upstairs bedroom?
Hope he don't get caught by Mr. Ed going poddy
Finds Elizabeth
wakes her up
He prevents her from screaming
notices the little sister
must convince her not to scream..now he has two little girls, awake, and he has to get them to co-operate
Reported he flashes a gun and makes threats of life
Tells Elizabeth to come put her shoes on
Leaves the bedroom,(hoping MK does not scream ) and goes somewhere else in the house
Mary Catherine see's him in another part of house and ducks back into room
HOW LONG MUST THIS HAVE TAKEN? OH..maybe 1/2 hr.
They leave the house on foot (unseen)
Go to the hidden car of his
He has to subdue her in the car.(don't know what he did)
Drives her to location to kill her (why?)
DO NOT KNOW HOW FAR HE HAS TO TRAVEL FOR THIS
kills her.(does she struggle? does she make noise?) Is he in remote part of area where screams can't be hears? How far did he drive? It is already late.
She is now dead. He has to bury the body. (with a post hole digger?)
He digs down, places the body and begins shoveling dirt.
Gets back into his car from wherever this is.
Has to now drive back to his Trailer.Not knowing where he buried the girl, if it is farther away from the Smart home or closer to his Trailer Park.
He then has to drive in the driveway of the Trailer Park.
It is summer and the sun comes up after 5:00 a.m.
Nobody in park see's him come in, or hears a car.
Get into the house, make no noise
Hope his wife isn't going poddy
Take off his clothes
Get into bed
And wake up with his wife at 6:00 - 6:30.
This is what I have to believe if Richard Recci did this. Same sanario applys to a buddy of his doing it as far as hiding a car, walking to the home, and entering,..on and on until body is buried or hidden in house.
Question: What buddy would go get Elizabeth FOR RICHARD without some kind of PAYMENT for doing it? think.
Nothing was stolen.no ransom demanded.
From there, tons of things go on..but for now, I am giong to strap on my full plated Armor Suit, and you should appreciate that, cause the heat index is 110 here and my computer is out on a porch that is not air conditioned (inside house is)...Ready for holes to be placed in Armor...called chinks.
Wait !! I never heard this one. Where did any publication or News Conference say that MK's description LED THEM TO RECCI ??
About that basement bedroom......in one interview, Ed Smart specifically said that he had gone down to check the basement bedroom, because the girls sometimes slept down there. Why would the girls sometimes sleep in the basement bedroom? Since there were early reports that the girls were sleeping together due to "renovations" on Elizabeth's room, I wondered if perhaps this basement bedroom had been Elizabeth's room......but then that theory was debunked when Lois came out to say that the girls had always shared the upstairs bedroom. I wonder where that story about Elizabeth's room being renovated got started?
Oh.....and remember the ex-mayor's slip of the tongue on TV, when he said something like, "A girl is snatched from the basement..."? I do remember Ed Smart saying something else about the basement during an interview.....he mentioned something about Elizabeth's harp being moved from the basement to the garage and back again when it had to be transported for a performance. I remember thinking at the time that the basement must have been where Elizabeth practiced her harp every day. Does anybody know if there are any rooms other than a bedroom in that basement?

We commit her parents to You and ask You to give them the strength to endure. Have mercy on this family, Lord, and help them to find their daughter. We pray that she would be found alive. We ask for amazing wisdom for the Salt Lake City Police and for all those involved in the investigation. You are forgeting about the Idaho case a few weeks ago or the case back east where the girl chewed through the duct tape. It is very possible.

You may have believed/heard that, but the police never believed the perp went out through the window.

There is a huge difference between being "hushed up" and not relevant. If it was hushed up, you probably wouldn't know about it. Hushed up is certainly perjoritive pharasing without any facts to support it.

She, I assume you mean ES, was told that, not MK. MK was pretending to be asleep. ES was also told that her family would be killed.

Nothing unusual about this according to shrink quoted in one of the links at the top of this page. Quite normal in fact.

"They" is commonly used to describe an unknown individual according to our resident linguist and therefore has little if any significance.

You are assuming that he didn't slip his wife a mickey which would put her out for 12 hours. Recall that she is usually somatose. You are also assuming that she isn't IN ON the scheme and wasn't involved in the planning. Why would you assume that one or the other wasn't the case?

Probably does know if Smarts use alarm since he worked in the house for several months and may even know the code. Few people change alarm systems from the original 1-2-3.

You are making a lot of assumptions on this one. The police or Smarts have never said the perp was aware that both girls were awake. In fact, statements by the police would indicate otherwise.

Most likely didn't kill her until much later, since at the time of the abduction he thought they could get a huge ransom. It was only after massive publicity, that he decided the risk was too high.

More than likely, Ricci's accomplice had the girl during this period and she was very much alive - in the Jeep with newspapers covering the floor. FWIW, a post hole digger is a good tool for digging any hole with a skilled operator - which Ricci was.

Items were stolen. Ransom demand was probably aborted to high publicity and risk of capture.
Taking xamt of a med doesn't make ----tose..it means they have built up a tolerance level...Probably one or two tabs would knock you out for a week, but not when you've built up a tolerance. And, why would you assume it's actually Ricci? Could be someone the family knows, or Tom, since the authorities said everyone's suspect. Don't forget Tom had a little vacation from being on the airwaves since he misspoke, remember?
