It was like a healthy, robust, opera singer belting out her final death song, then apparently dying, then bursting out in song again, then dying, then singing... on and on until you just want her to "DIE ALREADY!"

That is how they did things in Baroque opera (such as Handel's operas). The structure required that they repeat the verse with slight musical modifications, so if the scene was a death scene, the character does just what you describe. Makes staging these things with modern sensibilities pretty difficult, one reason why Handel's operas are so rarely performed.

Well, this might not be the most sane approach to entertainment, but A Little Romance is one of my most favorite films of all time, and I always feel weird seeing Diane Lane in grown up parts, because I always picture her as the cute little girl...
