“... shorts, flipflops and a Hawaiian shirt.”
When my wife’s sister was married, that’s what the groom and his groomsmen wore. It was an outdoor wedding in Hawaii. However, the bride and her bridesmaids wore dresses.
Thought of “My Cousin Vinny”.

Oh, the suit. Yeah, the suit.
Or cut more glass for the stained glass windows.
It really isn't that hard to wear a suit or a tie for one hour a week and I think God, while he doesn't command it, deserves it from us. The expression "Sunday best" should be just that--the best that we can offer. For those truly too poor to go to a thrift store and spend about $25 dollars to put together a suit and tie, I say God bless 'em. But I suspect a lot of people I see in cargo shorts and flip flops in my church (located in an upper middle class suburban area) do have or could afford better clothes. Again, the Lord doesn't command it or need it, but we ourselves should care enough to give him our very best.
Carhart overalls for all occasions is all one needs. They even have a collar for fancy occasions that require a bolo tie.
>> Because the way we dress is really a subtle message about how we see ourselves and others.
The mention of “enjoying” the service rather than “profiting” from it — or even better, “contributing worship to GOD during the service” — also speaks volumes about the current worship priorities in the American church.
Do you go ONLY to “enjoy the service and get fed”, or do you go to worship and praise Almighty GOD, become a better disciple of Jesus, and learn how to serve your LORD?
This is even MORE important than how you dress when you come into His presence to worship and learn and practice sanctification.
They tend to dress to the left, I see. That figures! LOL
“But what if we wear that same denim suit of clothes to a corporate job interview, church, funeral, or wedding?”
Job interview? Depends on the job. Funeral? Depends on who is being buried. Wedding? Nope.
Church? Yep. Been wearing jeans to church for close to 50 years now. Recently switched to cargo pants for better concealed carry, but I doubt the author would approve of that either!
I see no reason to return to the days where women and men dressed to impress others when going to church. I see nothing admirable about wearing a suit almost anywhere, which is why I only own one. I dislike seeing a pastor wearing torn jeans - or ANYONE wearing torn jeans unless they are working a job that might tear them. But a pastor wearing them is trying to say, “I’m no better than you” - and if so, then why am I supposed to listen to you speak for 30-60 minutes?
Clean clothes? Absolutely. Modest clothes? Absolutely. “Look at me” clothes? No thanks!
>> I’m ugly. Playing dress-up doesn’t help.
Don’t feel like the lone ranger!
Second opinion: I’m crazy too!
I have had young adults dress in pajamas to work.
I went to a funeral last week. An elderly uncle passed. He was in his late 90s.
Some of his former co workers showed up wearing jeans and sweatshirts. These guys were retired and NOT going out to work on a construction site afterwards.
I leaned over and said to my wife that these guys were lucky my aunt was already dead, because she would have gone over and told these guys they should have more respect.
My wife answer with something along the lines of, “How many of your former co-workers would bother to show up in 30 years? Isn’t that respectful enough?”
She had a point.
>> the deliberate holes and tears
That’s the “fashion statement” that I just cannot comprehend. Worn by the affluent, it seems like a guilty apology or something.
Sounds like someone has a problem with authority.
The change in clothing style was fundamentally due to a lessening of the seriousness and fidelity to purpose of the organizations and institutions involved.

Wow! Me too! Keeping their distance, know what I mean?
