The Milankovitch Cycle has not been borne out by further study or data.

Whatever you say. "Several other projects and studies have also upheld the validity of Milankovitch’s work, including research using data from ice cores in Greenland and Antarctica that has provided strong evidence of Milankovitch cycles going back many hundreds of thousands of years. In addition, his work has been embraced by the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences."

That is a really cool illustration! I have never seen anything like it before now. Thanks!

One thing that has always intrigued me is the sun is 400 times bigger and 400 times further away than the Moon, making them appear the same size.

What are the odds of that happening in a totally random universe?

You misunderstand the global warming “threat”. The earth only intersects less than one one-billionth of the energy radiated by the sun. Virtually all the energy released by man and nature orignated from the sun, except volcanos and tides.

The issue is the amount of energy retained. Sunlight heats the surface of the earth, and the surface reradiates that energy as infrared light. The air is warmed by the surface, directly by convection, and indirectly by absorbing infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide and water vapor are especially efficient at absorbing infrared radiation. Without carbon dioxide we would be quickly be plunged into an iciest ice age ever. The earth would be a frozen cueball. All that is prevented by a measly 400 parts per million of CO2.

More CO2 means that the atmosphere is more efficient at retaining energy and warms. There is too much of a good thing. It is not clear whether or not current CO2 levels are excessive, near optimal, or below optimal. No. One. Knows. What we do know is that humans have thrived and adjusted to the current levels. Carelessly and thoughlessly altering them is dangerous. We should be cautious. We need not panic. The energy economy of the Twentieth Century led to unprecedented increases in human well-being. It would be utterly foolish, criminal actually, to precipitiously abandon its benefits to humanity, but we need to recognize that there are risks.

My pleasure. There are some even nicer ones among the Astronomy Picture of the Day topics.

Why Earth is Closest to Sun in Dead of Winter

This seems to be a very Northern Hemisphere-centric point of view; in the "dead of winter" in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the dead of summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

Well, y’know, **** the southern hemisphere. Mostly water anyway.

The Sun’s cycle is an approximately 11-year period of solar activity, during which its magnetic field reverses polarity. This cycle includes a rise from a minimum to a maximum, characterized by increasing numbers of sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections, followed by a decline back to a minimum. The cycle affects Earth’s space weather, which can impact power grids, communication systems, and satellites.

“Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle. It is elliptical, or slightly oval-shaped. This means there is one point in the orbit where Earth is closest to the Sun, and another where Earth is farthest from the Sun.”

And the Sun is at a foci of this elliptical path. If the Sun was in the center there would be two times the earth is far away and two times it is close each year.

The path is only slightly elliptical, which is another reason it does not cause seasons.

i understand it just fine- even at 1 billionth, it might sound small, but it isn’t- the amount of CO2 from both man and nature amounts to just 0.04% of the atmosphere- nowhere near enough to cause global warming or even local warming- My profile page has plenty of evidence showing man is not responsible-

Even though this is a greenie sit-e and is spouting soem lies, they do have some facts- which they ignore in order to make their ‘man baD’ argument-

https://iere.org/how-much-of-the-suns-energy-reaches-earth/

The power absorbed by the planet from the sun is enough to power everything- many times over- that is a tremendous amount of energy

The atmosphere is approx 6 quadrillion tons- factor in how much CO2 in total weighs, and it’s nothing compared to it-

[[It is not clear whether or not current CO2 levels are excessive, near optimal, or below optimal]]

Sure there is- records show ppm well into the 1000’s and life survived just fine . 400 ppm is nothing- but greenies make it seem like we’re 1 part per million away from mass extinction

I have followed this issue for decades- even had a blog about it for awhile- Check out MaRc Morano’s site climatedepot.org s- https://www.climatedepot.com/author/marcmorano/ He has reams of scientific information proving man is not responsible
