My very favorite, also a love song:
Song For A Winter’s Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRIlTvYp0ok
That’s it.
“Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens...”
That does seem to be the consensus... Broke in half because of a "perfect storm" combination of reasons. There's speculation too that EF scraped the nearby shoal that wasn't quite mapped perfectly.
We'll never know, and it doesn't matter because it wouldn't bring those young men back if we did. IMO the Captain's last words, "We're holding our own" was because he knew they were going down and he didn't want to say the truth where the crew could hear it... maybe it was quick for them. RIP.
Lightfoot's song is a classic "in his style", IMO. Look at how many still talk about it...
"From what I've read", though, one of the variables was that EF's main hatches weren't battened down all the way, which made the ship vulnerable to water getting into the hold. Seems that the company didn't want to pay the overtime for that...
Lots of other aspects too... one of them being that Captain McSorley was under pressure to make the delivery on time...
One would hope that those, and other issues have been addressed, after the fact...
There are also two other explanations. One is that there was a wave under the bow and another on the stern. The fully loaded ship and the bottom just dropped out.
The other explanation came after sounding were taken of the bottom of the lake. It appears there was some shallow water and the EF simply ran aground and torn it bottom out.
Also, Lake iron ore carriers do not have water tight compartments.
All the experts say it broke up on the surface. It was overloaded and did not have the structural integrity to take those kinds of waves holding that kind of weightI
A body was discovered wearing a life jacket. That is intrepreted to mean that they knew what was coming.
It had to be terrifying.
Wow...and it took over 2 hours for the Titanic to sink?
The EF sank very quickly. There was no change to launch the lifeboats. The ship also carried life rafts that inflated quickly but again the ship sank so quickly and I suspect all the crew were inside.
But this song is one of the most musical paintings ever created.
You feel the sea in the sounds.
The first time I saw Gordon Lightfoot in concert was November 11, 1976 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. He told the audience, before he sang, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, “One year ago last night was when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank.” Talk about a sobering intro. That was a very special night that I will not forget.
You have an opinion.
That’s cute ...
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Is yours more valid, clown?
Yes.
Yes, it is.
Doofus.
And calling people “clown” is worn-out, hackneyed, and gay.
Just so you know.
Eat some onions and get a life, jackass clown. Is that better?
Go back to San Francisco, gay-boy.
