I know the schism between catholics and protestants, but it is history.

I'm a nominal catholic.

Only a nominal, i.e. ign9rant catholic would say that. Not talking fight and hate, but the only thing history about truth and God is 40,000 denominations splitting into 300,000 home churches.

Satan wins by divide and conquer. And the people of G9d l9se, catholic (universal) and the 40,000 whatever they call themselves....40,001....nominal catholics included. That sounds harsh, but admit it.

He should have made it and even 100. Or at least 99 so there could be a drinking song about it.

This was 60 years after the Moravian Church was established. That is considered the origin of the Protestant churches.

The Waldensians are even earlier--they go back to Peter Waldo in the late 12th century.

Of course the term "Protestant" is first used in 1529.

Agreed. Or perhaps go back further to someone who inspired Juan Hus --- John Wycliffe in the late 14th century. He's sometimes called the "morning star of the Protestant Reformation".

You have to give Luther credit for being prescient. He foresaw the invention of Twitter and made most of the 95 theses short enough to fit into a tweet. Of course the fact that they were written in Latin made it easier.

The Discripter “Catholic” ?
What are it’s origins?

I disagree wholeheartedly. Most of us Protestants call ourselves Christians first and foremost. You often have to ask us multiple times what denomination we attend before we tell you, because it's not front and center in our minds. And in America we attend evening Bible studies / small groups in each other's churches.

FReeper ebb tide is one of the few American Christians who exist to trash other Christians.

By the way, I, a Protestant, would rather have our country's leaders be Catholic than be hedonist pushing, America hating, race baiting Dims, even if the Dims claim to be Protestant "Christians" (or hedonist pushing "Catholic" Dims).

I don’t think I could even call our present day Lutheran organization a church.

Whatever credibility you may have had just ran out the door by citing perhaps the most discredited roman catholic “apologetic”.

ebb’s apparent purpose in life is to be a provocateur. Very few, and I mean very few, agree with him/her in these matters.

It means “universal”—it is already found in the Nicene Creed. In Augustine’s day it was used of the churches in North Africa which were in communion with those elsewhere (as opposed to the Donatists).

“I don’t think I could even call our present day Lutheran organization a church.”

Depends entirely on which Lutheran organization you’re talking about.

There’s a big difference between “small-’c’ catholics (body of Christ) and “capital-’C’ Catholics (denomination / cult).

The church we go to reads/recites “Creeds” which have “catholic” in them. I’m not a fan of any creed, but do read them with the congregation.
