I will always be grateful to Nixon for his Operation Linebacker II (bombing of Hanoi and mining of Haiphong harbor) but the EPA, price controls...taking us off the gold standard, those were not conservative moves at all. (I don’t blame Nixon for his overtures to China...that was an appropriate geopolitical move at that point in the Cold War which he was pursuing as a counterweight to the USSR.)
As for the intellectual capacity in our industrial base, I believe Trump is on the right track with respect to foreign investment in this country. A good example that is our shipbuilding capability. It is anemic to say the best, and we need a minimum of two additional shipyards to service our fleet.
But if we build them, where are we going to get skilled shipbuilders to manage them? A fair question.
If Korea does invest in shipbuilding in the continental United States (as they are pledged to do) they are going to hire Americans to work at those shipyards, and that will increase our intellectual capacity, who can work at new American shipyards.
Other industries can have a similar path to rebuild.
The way I see it, we didn’t lose our industrial base overnight, and we won’t get it back overnight, but we need to try, and Trump is the only one who seems to have taken the bull by the horns on this.
It may already be too late. But darn, we absolutely should try. We have to shake off the environmentalists and legal challenges to be able to do it, though, with energy, mineral exploration and exploitation. In this world, we simply cannot be beholden to a country that is our enemy.

I gave up a successful engineering career 25 years ago to do something serious about defining new policy to undo the industrial wreckage the environmental move-mint has wrought. That was < ahref=my first book. What I didn't anticipate was how terribly destructive their "environmental" policies are to the environment (although I did understand what they were doing to forests). I have spent 25 years full-time proving its antithesis for those reasons. I have documented that work in my third book, Wildergarten.
In recent years I have rediscovered in the teachings of a linguistically accurate understanding of the Biblical Sabbath for the Land and then Genesis 4 (the current thesis is far from linguistically correct) the need for a quasi pastoralist industry in land management. The teachings of that chapter have proven themselves repeatedly from the desertification of the Sahara 7,000 years ago to the melting of the permafrost today.
I can see we are simpatico on some of these issues.
