I live about 35 miles north of Laurel. The attention from the TV show has brought some much needed improvements to Laurel but I still wouldn't say it's nice. I get a chuckle out of seeing tourists actually making it a destination, I wouldn't drive hundreds of miles to see it. It's not as run down as it was 20 years ago but it's still kind of a dump. The downtown area has been spruced up and it's got some nice shops & restaurants.

Mississippi is a very rural state and truth be told it really doesn't have many nice towns or cities. I live here because I love the country, abundant nature and slow pace of life while generally not having to worry about the latest scheme some lefty has come up with to "help" me. I live in an old 1890's farmhouse I've remodeled on 220 acres and as I type this I'm looking out my window at my pond, I can't see another house from mine. I travel a lot and when I want the trappings of civilization I go somewhere else.

I love this return to beauty. Especially I love that the people doing it are not asking the public or the government for handouts for the revitalization. They are just doing it.

My friends I can dig it. Restoring old homes involves a labor of love. That town I dunno.
Could be the improvements are catching on thanks to the show.

You would think the real place for fixer-uppers would be Clarksdale, birthplace of the blues. Its downtown is mostly boarded up and there might be one occupied building per block. All the businesses are newer buildings on the outskirts of town where you need a car.

I could picture it as another Branson, Missouri but it would all be done and run for the white folk. Now if the gay community could jump in and grab the bull by the horns...

Look. They’re mobile, got money(no kids). Plus they like to have fun. That’s what the music is for.

Big name musicians might want to get involved.

Steve Forbert had a diffrent opinion:

Well, I’m goin’ down to Laurel
It’s a dirty stinkin’ town, yeah
But me I know exactly what I’m going to find
Little girl I’m goin’ to see
She is a fool for lovin’ me
But she’s in love and love’s a funny state of mind
