Because a tariff is a specific, targeted tax upon the consumption of an imported good. But it IS a tax.
As I have cited elsewhere, my wife got a surprise bill for $15 based on spools of yarn she had bought on-line from Denmark.
Like any other tax, it meant an individual had to fork over money to the government.
So every country can tariff the crap out of our products or quota them.
Yet we can’t?
All BS.
By definition “small government” means small taxes, small tariffs, small regulation, small impact of government on the economy or any part of society.
In my lifetime the words “Republican” and “conservative” and “capitalist” have meant “small Federal government” (although behavior has not always matched the rhetoric).
Tariffs is big government intervention, by definition.
Tariffs do not grow the size of government
Oh so right you are - everyone should follow your impeccable wisdom.
The income tax ( globalist love them ) are intrusive. You have it ass backwards.
Tariffs are optional and unobtrusive.
Looks like you just want to have an argument that serves absolutely no purpose, on the internet.
I’m a bit too old to try doing that anymore.
Sales taxes, income taxes, real estate taxes, license taxes can be at the local, state or big government federal level.
Tariffs can only be at the big government federal level. Thus they inherently are big government.
Note that I (currently) have no position on tariffs. My observation is that absolutely nobody has put together a coherent, logical document on tariffs. In contrast Homan has on immigration. Many documents over many years support DOGE.
What we can and cannot do with tariffs is dependent on the will of Congress.
Clearly, putting up a prohibitive tariff wall against all imports would cripple our economy, but if Congress enacts it sobeit.
I’m a bit too old to try doing that anymore.

And obtuse
Unfortunately you are a globalist cultist and give an inch. The fact is tariffs are the least obtrusive form of taxation there is.
