I took a transcendental meditation course in my early 20s on my doctor’s advice for migraines. At the end of one of the sessions I was given my personalized meditation phrase which I was supposed to keep secret. It was “om,” which I’m pretty sure was the phrase given to everyone there. I never became an aficionado of TM, but I did learn how to relax my body which helped my headaches somewhat.

I was 16 and living in SoCal in 1969 so no chance of attending. I was able to go to California Jam at Ontario Speedway in 1974, which was pretty awesome. It was also exhausting physically and mentally and is responsible for my hatred of crowds to this day.

The best decade of music, ever.

My dad thought the 1930s were. My kids think the 1990s were.

“Everything now seems bland and boring and nothing seems new. We had 40 or 50 years of sparkling invention.”

Good summation. I agree.

But performers perform what attracts audiences.

Hip Hop is to music as Biden is to politics.

Every decade , or ten year period has its defining moments.
I’m not a Kennedy fanboy, he was not remarkable to me. Trump does “hard” things every day. As far as the music, yes clearly it helped define the decade and I’d argue early 60’s to mid 70’s (decade and a half) really saw innovation.

So innovation is what we are really witnessing and that’s the defining aspect of these decades. winning wars with newly developed super bombs, The Conservative movement of the 80’s, the explosion of the internet in the 90’s, etc.

COVID defines this decade, even though it happened right at the beginning of it.

“Pull the Covers Right Up” by The Tran-Sisters...their name was a take on transistor radios which were the MP3 players of that era. Today the name would be misconstrued as being ‘alternate lifestyle’.

When I first heard the song, I thought it was by sisters from a Vietnamese family named Tran, but there were not a lot of Vietnamese in this country in 1963.

Another tribute to the popular radios of the day was Transistor Sister by Freddy Cannon (1961). The girl in question likes to listen to "Presley, Darin and U.S. Bonds" and "Fats and Connie and Orbison." U.S. Bonds is the only one still living today.

I never had any dealings with transcendental meditation by mother in law did. She asked two or three times if they were going to push her into a religious ceremony or adoration of someone other than the one true God. They promised no. Just meditation.

After a few sessions everyone had to go into the next room where there was an altar with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi with flowers and candles and people kneeling to chant.
That was her exit cue.

One of the few times I agreed with her.
