Your assertion is contradicted by two basic facts.
First, Estonia and Latvia are already NATO members. Each of them has a land border with Russia. They’re right on top of St. Petersburg and about as far from Moscow as Ukraine is. So NATO could put missiles there right now if it wanted to.
Second, Ukraine has been independent for decades. If the plan was for Ukraine to join NATO and host nuclear missiles, that could have been done long before Putin’s invasion in 2022.
The Russian propaganda line about a supposed threat is a familiar lie from dictators wanting to launch aggressive war to seize territory. “Many German farmhouses in the Polish Corridor are in flames,” said the Nazis, before invading Poland. Perpetrators of that war were hanged at Nuremberg.
Putin is also a war criminal. In a just world, he too would be executed.
Do you really think anyone in the west has the stomach for going to war with Russia?
The Cuban crisis was about a hostile country (Soviet Union) that did not already have a land border or close proximity to the US, setting up shop close to the US with hostile intent. That was a *new* level of access to the US mainland that wasn’t there before.
Ukraine (western ally) already shares a land border with Russia. Taking a part of eastern Ukraine doesn’t change that fact. There is no greater or lesser threat toward Russia because of it (assuming there is hostile intent in the first place). The border just moves westward. The perceived threat toward Russia doesn’t change as a result of the land grab.
