Ryne was a Spokane,WA boy, graduate of North Central High School. IIRC, NC’s baseball field is named for Sandberg.

RIP

In 84 the Tigers and Cubs were on a World Series collison course all season long. I remember renting a VCR machine so I could record the games(big deal in 84 to rent a machine to record the games). I took vacation days to be able to not miss a moment. The 84 Cubs were going to heal the devastating season of 69 and those damn Metropolitans. I was just sure that was the year. In true Cub fashion, choked again, and they really were the better team. Oh well, 2016 FINALLY made all things right in the Cub Universe.

Ryno was able to return to the Cubs organization for the 2016 run. He was Cubs Ambassador.

RIP Ryno and thanks for the memories.

The Cubs were never going to beat the Tigers that year.

I’ll give em this. Loudest cheer I ever heard was in the old Tiger Stadium for a walk off homer during those days of Sparky Andersons Tigers. It was a major roar as the ball sailed out but once it cleared the fence it went to 11. Absolutely stunning level of sound which I think had to do with the enclosed nature of the stadium.

We’ll never know, will we.

At least the Padres weren’t World Series Champs😁👍

Me too and Ernie Harwell. Comerica is nice but that old wooden structure had character that will never be replaced. The only oldies left are Wrigley and Fenway and if I had to pick I’d take Tiger Stadium over them. I’ve been to all three.

Fenway Park (1912) and Wrigley Field (1914) are my favorite MLB ballparks. Never went to Tigers Stadium but my husband got to see Tigers Stadium just a few weeks before the Stadium closed its doors for good.

I would say it wasn’t as picturesque as Fenway or Wrigley but the stands both upper and lower decks completely wrapped around the field. The broadcast booths were insanely close to the action. It was just a no nonsense baseball diamond with a relatively deep centre field.

You’re absolutely right. My bad, thanks for correcting me. And I’m a Cubs fan, too. For shame…😖

The only thing that gets me over that is knowing that nobody was beating the Tigers that year.

Yeah the 1984 Tigers team was nearly unbeatable. Dumped the Padres in five games.
