Some years ago my wife and I had gone to Cape Cod and ended up at the “Head of The Meadow” beach. This was my first time on the beaches at Cape Cod out in that area near the tip, and I went for a walk to see how down the beach I could go.
I was astonished that there was any beach on the East coast where one could walk for hours and not see another person, and this made a great impression on me.
I had been walking for a while before I saw another human being, but one was approaching from far, far away.
As we got closer, I was startled to see he was completely, buck naked, carrying his bathing suit in his hand.
In a weirdly awkward exchange (for me, at least) we passed, and I said something like “Good afternoon.”
After we passed, I paused and turning, said “Excuse me, is this a nude beach I am approaching?” and he said no, it was just what people did by common convention in this area even if it was against the law, and he carried his bathing suit in case he saw a Park Ranger approaching so he could put it on and avoid a ticket.
It was completely weird.
