Both stadiums where it happened(Wembley and JFK) have been demolished.
How .uch of the 100 milliom reached Ethiopia?
Were you there?? I was- to say “other acts just seemed like they were going through the motions” is pathetic....
There were obvious reasons why Led Zeppelin did not sound good but there is no denying the excitement, anticipation and emotion when they came out onto the stage...
The Four Tops, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, The Pretenders, Tom Petty and Neal Young were all incredible- just to name a few...
As per Queen- yes- they were good (they should’ve been- they had been touring together the prior two years) yet this “it was Queen and everyone else” storyline is BS...
And the issue still remains. The Left only cared about the issue….not the solution.
How much of that money actually made it to hungry Ethiopians?
So I guess after all these years famine has been eliminated in Ethiopia….or did a lot of vermin just get rich?
In 1985 dozens of musicians got together to produce an album to help starving people in Africa. It was a noble effort but you can’t save everyone, especially if they are under the heels of socialist and Marxist governments. They pleaded for help and got nothing but words. Ideological mush never solved anything. And today, even though the musicians stated they would continue their aid concerts, farmers who had fed the population of Rhodesia, were killed and driven out because they were white. Do the musicians sing for them? Hunger is now weaving its dark tentacles through a once prosperous Zimbabwe and Zambia. The same thing was now happening in South Africa.
They would have been better off listening to Sam Kinison.
I was at Live Aid in Philadelphia- i went for the concert, not the cause- it was an incredible day i will never forget...
There was no politics that i remember during the concert. Unlike Live 8 or all the clowns speaking out about US Aid these days, there was no demand US tax payer $$$ be used for their cause- it was just people calling in with donations...
That i could respect considering everyone demanding our tax dollars these days....
I went to see Rick Springfield a couple years ago. I wish I could have gone to see Sam Kinison instead. Springfield is a mess.
Rick’s in pretty good shape though at 75.
Most of the money went to warlords.
Forgot about it completely. Vaguely recall hearing about it at the time. These “artists” sure think highly of themselves to drag up something like that all these years later.
All of it.
$95 million went to buy weapons for CIA-backed rebels and $5 million went for food aid.
It was the birth of woke virtual-signaling.
Haha
Very funny
I totally agree there were some great performances. I actually wasn’t that impressed by Queen (but I’m not a fan of theirs). I was 16 at the time and we watched as much of it as we could (and of course recorded it on VCR to watch again and again). I “discovered” Albert Collins and BB King thanks to Live Aid. I was recently watching the DVD and I’ve gotta say, there were a lot of performances I liked. Madonna was great, as was Tina Turner, and I really enjoyed REO Speedwagon. But for us it was all about the music, not the politics.
“Freddie Mercury’s and Queen’s swansong. They stole the whole day, all the other acts just seemed like they were going through the motions. Led Zeppelin was awful”
As much as I now loath Bono, Live Aid definitely gave U2 a major boast in popularity that went on for another 25 years, they did fine. As did The Who.
Excellent post- but truth be told- there was not a lot of politics injected into the concert- especially the way there would be today....
I was not a fan of Madonna’s performance though- it was in the middle of the day, it was hotter than hell and she bored me.
After Led Zeppelin finished their set i went in the back and sat against the wall for 45 minutes as i was spent- Live Aid was over for me...yeh- all these years later everyone could say they did not sound good yet the anticipation, build up and emotion of them getting back on stage in the US for the first time in 8 years was incredible...
BTW- check out the Four Tops performance- they were great...the crowd loved them and you could tell they really appreciated being there as well as the reaction they were getting from a bunch of 20-something year old white kids...
