Fakes are easy to tell; especially by an expert.People who buy the fakes don't care that they're fakes, or they don't know enough to tell the difference, even when the fake costs far less than the REAL item.
If someone sells you a piece of jewelry and claims that it is from HARRY WINSTON, CARTIER,or TIFFANY, at much LOWER price...the odds are it's a fake! these items are stamped, have serial numbers, and even with faked pressings , IF you but the item on a street in Manhattan, or Chicago, etc., you're an IDIOT if you believe that it's REAL!
The same thing can be said about a Birkin bag that is supposedly made from ostrich, or some other expensive leather, or even a plain leather one! And second hand items can also be FAKES! You aren't asked to show a sales slip when you sell an item to a store that resells USED items;though buying from a reputable "used"/previously owned purveyor is safer than buying anything being sold on the street or in a store in China Town, in Manhattan.
If they are luxury products then they are not cost-sensitive and can easily absorb any higher costs resulting from making them in US factories.
While your premise of absorbing higher costs is probably true, I don’t think you are going to see these things manufactured in th US, as these luxury Brands are not US based Corps.
And the fact is, many of these brands ARE seeing falling interest in their products and their bottom line IS suffering.
Actually - Watches are back in because they CAN monitor heart rate and other biometric measures !
Not really stupid... they're buying the sanctimony and symbolism (THEY might say "status"), not a watch that makes their life THAT much better than a $12 Casio. So they ARE getting what they pay for.
Further, they already have everything else that they need and want, so what else is there to do with the money? Well... some people prefer saving, some people prefer investing or enterprise-building, some people prefer philanthropy, and some people prefer showing off. It is what it is. We all have different motivations and desires.
