“We are warned constantly not to “engage in strenuous” activities during those times.”
So are we... But it is like “shelter in place”. We still have to live and function normally and do not have that option. The problem is we have pampered ourselves and refuse to acclimate. We live in a constant four degree environment or our minds complain. We go from climate controlled homes, to climate controlled vehicles, to climate controlled work places and back in the same order.
Or it would be no problem. The body will adapt and acclimate every summer and winter to the heat and cold if we just let it. So living in and demanding this perpetual four degree environment is indeed a human weakness universally... Avid outdoorsmen and workers understand this reality well. They don’t even use AC in vehicles because they are in and out of vehicles too often and this change back and forth can really mess you up even worse than the constant extreme heat it’s self.
So the weakness I speak of is the refusal to harden one’s self to the extremes of their own environment. It is just common. But to disparage those who are indeed smart enough and tough enough to do this is just not right. I personally hike all the time in the summer metal detecting for enjoyment. I am acclimated and hardened to it and don’t even notice it. And there is a whole culture in the desert that does the same all summer long. It is “normal”. The “warnings” are for those four degree environment weak city people.
But I will admit there is a huge difference between the central valley with all the farming and the dry desert where we are in Az. Even we would have to re-acclimate to that humidity difference...
Ah ha...so that is why my face
gets beet red during heavy exercise...always wondered about that.
“so that is why my face gets beet red during heavy exercise...always wondered about that.”
I studied it, and be wary of that. What happens is when your brain starts to get overheated and distressed the heart and blood system directs more blood to your head and brain to circulate and cool it down just like a car radiator does. So when this happens your brain is right on the edge of overheating and causing damage. It is a sure indicator you are right at your limit and about ready to pop something. :)
I’m in Arizona and the high today is 78°, sunny with cobalt blue skies and cotton ball clouds. The next eight days its going to go down to the mid 60s.
This article sounds like a bunch of typical stupid tourists.
LOL
When stationed at Nellis AFB, we used to hike down to Ringbolt Rapids to watch al the nekkid hippie chicks out “sunbathing”.

Yeah, it is clothing optional... lol
I wondered about that when I read about the kids group going down there. :)
95 degrees is in the shade….all of that rock and sand will be well above 100.
They had to close a couple of popular hiking trails in Phoenix due to all the deaths and rescues from the heat. People fly into Phoenix and the first thing they do is hike Camelback Mt. in mid-afternoon. Then they make the evening news...
“95 degrees is in the shade….all of that rock and sand will be well above 100.”
Absolutely, And if it was in the afternoon the sun reflects heat off the hills right at you like a mirror down in there. It is like being at the center aiming point of a parabolic dish.
But it is no different than being in the city with those same temps. In fact black asphalt gets much hotter than those rocks and sand do.
” 25 children with special needs.”
The only reason why a sane adult (s) would take “ 25 children with special needs.” into the desert is if they were trying to KILL them.
They should have rescued the children and left the chaperones there.
