I saw a price of .84 Euros per kilowatt-hour on a street charger here in Milan.

Expect annual fees for your EV.

92¢ per kWh. A US gallon of gas equals about 33.7 kWh, so that’s about $31 per gallon.

Simple, just put a tracker in every EV so you can know where every person is every second of every day, so that you can tax by the mile. I’m sure this database would never be weaponized, nor would it be expanded to close the “ICE car loophole” because we can trust government.

Are there really enough EVs out there to make a dent in gas tax revenues?

No clue.

Not that I’m citing AP as any kind of reliable source, mind you.

Revenue is not the aim of taxation.

It’s control.

Anything to drive (no pun) people/cars out of the state they’ll do it. No thanks, stay there.

States and municipalities had their chance decades ago when the watermelon environmentalist types (green outside, Marxist red inside) agitated for special bicycle lanes but never instituted an equitable system of road use taxes and licensing for them.

If you’re gonna tax EV’s, you MUST tax bicycles. License, registration, mileage fees, all of that.

And return “road use taxes” from state general funds BACK to highway and surface road maintenance and construction, not pet projects to buy votes from “urban Americans,” teachers’ union thugs and illegal aliens.

As if they actually used the gas tax money to take care of the infrastructure for cars.
Bike paths and hiking trails maybe.
Some politicians slush fund, definitely.
New York diverts 37.5% of its gas tax revenue,
Rhode Island diverts 37.1%, New Jersey and Michigan divert 33.9%,
Maryland diverts 32.5%, Connecticut diverts 27%,
Texas diverts 24%, Massachusetts diverts 23.9%,
Florida diverts 13.6% and Vermont diverts 13.2%.

Many states allowed lotteries and gambling to pay for public education.

Just over 80% of the states have an EV surcharge fee for yearly vehicle registrations. Does that fee cover the wear and tear a similar sized ICE would inflict on the roads? Well up to a point. Depending upon state gas taxes, the break even point might be 7K miles a year. After that the EV pays no taxes. The question is how do squeeze the EV owner for the extra road tax if they drive over a certain amount.

That’s how it’s done in Alabama when we do our annual car tag renewal. After buying our EV in 2022 I noticed an extra $200 EV fee in my car tag cost that my gas pickup car tag fees don’t have. This year it’s not a flat fee, but a higher rate vs gas car rate in the calculation of car value times tax rate = car tag fee. I’m not fussing. EV owners should pay for road upkeep too. Just saying it’s part of the math when listing costs vs savings when determining if an EV would save you money or cost you money.
