Problem being, rejecting a constitutional monarchy makes Canada (or Australia where same argument has been tested more directly) a republic. That concentrates all power in the head of state elected in one riding out of 338. It would lead to calls for a prime ministerial election. It doesn’t work in our form of parliamentary democracy to have division of powers like a republic. So it’s not going to happen. That’s why Canada has retained a governor general. They have absolutely no political power, but they guarantee the non-existence of a republic and the changes that would need to take place.

In our system, if the Liberals won an election but the Conservative leader was elected prime minister by a majority of popular vote (or a Canadian version of electoral college) then we would have a non-sustainable government, because the elected prime minister would not have powers to introduce legislation while the leader of the Liberals in parliament would have it, and so there would be no point.

There is no widespread desire for republican government in Canada. It’s a cultural difference based on choice and my personal opinion about it would not matter. I am basically stranded in a country I don’t have anything in common with, and should move across to America, except that I am now retired and have family ties that would be broken by such a move. As far as the current situation goes, if it is to become a referendum on globalism or non-globalism, the Conservative Party of Canada is stranded also in no man’s land, having gone along with most of the globalist agenda most of the time. The one active anti-globalist party in Canada has no chance of electing more than one or two members out of 338. We are in a very weak and divided situation in Canada right now. About half of Canadians either strongly or somewhat oppose Trudeau, and three-quarters want nothing to do with socialist Jagmeet Singh (NDP leader). But nobody wants a merger with America either.

(fewer than 5% would vote in favor of merger negotiations let alone support their end result)

Can’t edit my post, but also, our governor general has been for the past century a Canadian, not some import from Britain as was the case in the earliest days of national status.

Nobody in Canada expects the governor general to do anything political. Their time is spent doing ceremonial things like the Royal family do, opening hospitals and museums, and reading the government’s intentions in the “speech from the throne” to open parliament. Note carefully, they don’t write or edit the speech, somebody hands it to them and they read it. It could say “we plan to abolish the constitutional monarchy” and they would read it. That’s how much political power they have — zero. Steven Colbert has more political power in your country than the governor general has in ours.

Thank you for an excellent and thoughtful explanation!
