I saw “Dr. Zhivago” at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on August 31, 1966. It even came with a printed program like the ones issued at concerts and stage plays. The film helped to strengthen my conservative outlook in its illustration of the horrors of Communism.

My Fathers elders fled to Canada, then the US. They described themselves as “White Russians”. I never put it together until now, they were loyalists to the Czar.

Some of my favorite movies:
- "The Girl Can't Help It" (1956)--a theatrical agent down on his luck teams up with a has-been Prohibition-era gangster in an attempt to cash in on the new rock and roll music craze
- "Hollywood Revue of 1929"--no plot, but a series of musical production numbers and skits
- "Big Jim McClain"--John Wayne, playing an investigator for the House Committee on Un-American Activities chases Red spies through Hawaii
- "Pig Skin Parade" (1936)--A bureaucrat in Yale University's athletic department is told to send an invitation to the University of Texas to play Yale in a charity football game, but he mistakenly sends it to a small college, Texas State College--which accepts! This was Judy Garland's first--and in my opinion best--film, and it was filmed at my alma mater Occidental College.
- "The Big Broadcast of 1938"--This movie musical is about two ocean liners that race each other across the Atlantic Ocean.

I see his loving confrontation with his half-brother. He reminded me of Freddy Mercury in his talent.
Rod Steiger was good in that flick. .

If only negotiating with Putin could be this simple:
Austin Millbarge: [selects a Trivial Pursuit card] Comrade, okay, what Little Richard song was the title of a 1950s movie starring Jayne Mansfield?
Russian Rocket Crew #1: Guud Golly, Miss Molly?
Russian Rocket Crew #2: Great Balls of Fire?
Austin Millbarge: Wrong! It was “The Girl Can’t Help It.”
Emmett Fitz-Hume: Sorry! You lose.
Karen Boyer: Eastern Europe?
Emmett Fitz-Hume: Eastern Europe.

It was on TODAY on TMC. Always one of my favorites because of the haunting, beautiful music and the gorgeous scenery of that ice house. I had no idea what it was all about when I saw it as a child, but it has always been one of my favorites.

I agree that he was a light weight. He was weak. Tonya and her parents were much stronger people.

Pasternak was overwhelmed by the revolution himself and stumbled his way through those terrible times the way most of us would. He was a poet, rather than a novelist, so he was interested in specific moments of beauty more than anything else. That may account for some of the defects in the novel and in Yuri Zhivago’s character.

Both Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia are among my favorite movies. Also, Patton, Casablanca, the Godfather, the Searchers. Also, I could name at least a couple of dozen others about which I would unhesitatingly say “Definitely worth watching.”
Many movies are drech. But not all!

Zhivago was a spoiled rotten brat with no moral compass who caused suffering to those who loved him. He loved nobody.

My grandmother, her sister and their mother left for China, along with a bunch of other Russians. They passed their utter hatred for Communists on to us.
