So you're punished if you live close to the office.....makes zero sense.
Presumes you can find someone in Ukraine that can do your job.
If 30 seconds faceTOface can replace a series of asynchronous documents — Dell employees are apparently dullards.
Both approaches have their strengths and place. Only idiots or religious zealots think otherwise.
Dell bosses are simply using this to purge. rightly so. But, don’t say stoopid crappola.
The spoken word is prone to misunderstanding but text is actually worse. I hate text and e-mail when a short discussion would save time and convey more information with the added benefit of strengthening a relationship.
DuLL is working on a layoff without a layoff.
‘For all the technology in the world, nothing is faster than the speed of human interaction’
Well, duhhhhhh.
As many here already know when your team members are all in the same office area, a short meeting with all in attendance is far more productive than days of exchanging emails and texts.
I’ve seen nothing that competes with a few of the right people being at a white board.
I say this as somebody in the tech industry for 35 years. I’d love for the opposite to be true...I’m yet to see it.
I have a co-worker whose motto is to never schedule a meeting for something that can be handled with an email.
If you work in the office, your job can be done in Ukraine for 1/10 the cost.
We’ve had offshoring for ages prior to the current fondness for WFH.
I was a salesman for over 40 years, sometimes from an office, sometimes from home, BUT one thing was constant, I was always measured by performance compared to my assigned QUOTA.
The people/companies I worked for didn't care where I made my sales calls from, but only if I did my job of at least 100% of quota.
I NEVER believed that I was better than anyone in my organization, but I loved the fact that I was measured by performance ONLY.
I used to drink and carouse during the daylight hours... but when I killed my quota numbers, no one cared...and to this day, I do not apologize for success.
Because I am color blind, I always wore WHITE SHIRTS, so I was a white collar employee, and the few times I didn't, I looked like a clown or a pimp.
BTW, I always worked at least 60, but more often 80 hours, every week, regardless of where I was located.
It seems like a flow chart would be helpful:
Is it truly necessary to have the answer immediately?
Yes >> go ask in person
No >> send an email
Does this involve discussing the complex interaction of 3 different departments and getting it done quickly?
Yes >> set up a zoom meeting
No >> not time sensitive >> set up an IRL meeting with a 1-hour time
No >> not complex >> use email
I feel like in-person has certain advantages for certain situations but that other means have advantages is different situations. I don’t think there is a one-size-fits-all, but I must say that being in the office at least some of the time might allow for knowledge of office politics and the lack of that can be problematic.
