There have been U.S. troops in Syria since Obama sent them there in 2015. He even added to the number of troops there in 2016. In 2018, President Trump ordered all 2,000 troops removed from Syria, but top diplomat Jim Jeffrey admitted lying repeatedly to top government officials and the President about the number of troops still there. Biden left them there, claiming they needed to be there to prevent Islamic State resurgence, and it ended up with Iranian-backed rebels taking over the country anyway.
“By who?”
Western media, NON-STOP. The line was that were were in Syria to “Fight ISIS”. Well, ISIS is about as terrorist as one can get, so I guess we must have been allies with Assad, since he was doing the same.
Please don’t tell me that our lovely Western Media was LYING TO US all those years about our mission there, I don’t know if could survive such news...
Unity and Justice. Note that it does not mean the same thing to moslems as to civilized people. For Moslems there can be unity only when the whole population is of one brand of Mohammedan and everyone ese is enslaved, paying jizyah or dead.
The Russians let Assad think they were keeping him in power with the awesomness of their military machine if not with their actions.
Russia’s wonderful weapons including their invinvible anti-air weapons turned out to be Mattel knockoffs of real guns and couldn’t stand up under a little teasing by Israeli F-15s. Is rael, by the way, demonstrates that we wasted a hell of a lot of money on those Do-Eeverything F-35s. when upgrading F-15s as the Israelis continually do is a hell of a lot cheaper and they are better planes.
Can’t we just make a bunch of upgraded F15s perhaps in a joint US Israeli venture?
Only dummies or tools (neither of which you qualify as) lump together all the anti-Assad forces as terrorists. The Kurds can be themselves split into 3 groups, with the YPG tabbed as terrorists by Turkey (at least some are) but the majority of Kurds are not terrorists despite being opposed to Assad. Hostilities between the Kurds and Syrian Army forces have been modest recently (for this region, anyway!) with Assad content to let Hezbollah* and Iranian backed militias from Iraq attack the Kurds in the East; Turkish forces and Turkish backed groups attacking the Kurds in the North.
Don’t get me wrong, the Kurds hate Assad, with good reason, but, they don’t seem to have any designs on Damascus themselves. Most indications are that given a reasonable settlement of territory, significant autonomy, and no attacks on them by Assad or his backers, Assad would have had little to fear from the Kurds. The Kurds would still have their hands full with AQ, ISIS, and Turkish backed forces. HTS would be a question, but HTS controls little territory directly bordering Kurdish areas anyway, and an uneasy truce between HTS and the Kurds would make a lot of sense. Neither can really afford to be fighting the other. Similarly, HTS and the Kurds making clear they have no hostile intent toward Israel makes a lot of sense for those 3 parties. Granted that such a “partial solution” is a long shot. 1 in 5 at best(?), and even then, that assumes maximum cooperation in keeping Hezbollah stomped.
You’ve obviously never witnessed a 5-way bar fight.
Except that the Israelis use F-35’s to clear the way for F-15’s. Both have their roles.
But Hezbollah most certainly are terrorists and Assad was allied and then some with Hezbollah, so where does that leave you?
Why were our troops ever in Syria?
We most certainly worked with the terrorists that formed ISIS and murdered the Christian population there, just like we've worked with new terrorists, who are also Christians as well as our "allies" the Kurds.
Apparently, none of that bothers you, though.
Trump, thankfully, wants us out of the Syrian hellhole, just like he did during his first term.
“But Hezbollah most certainly are terrorists and Assad was allied and then some with Hezbollah, so where does that leave you?”
Where did we leave Assad? You take whatever ‘friends’ you can and pay them what they demand when you have your backs to wall because of the Neocons moving to take him down. My problem was what was Assad doing to the US or Israel? Last I saw, the border with Israel was quiet and Assad (and Russia) allowed Israel to do the dirty work necessary to keep Hezbollah down.
