Two Progressives. correction. WWI and WWII.
Seems a lot of websites seem to have forgotten the Day of Infamy.
I was one month old...can remember later,as a young child, my parents talking a lot of this attack.
A visit to Pearl Harbor is a must for all Americans capable of making it. I compare my emotions there to how I felt when I visited Gettysburg— Awe and sadness.
That sounds so strange to me.
When I was growing up, the parents of all my friends were World War II veterans.
I knew where all their Fathers had fought, in which service, and their rank.
Closing fast on one century - incredible.

First Kill in World War II - United States Naval Reserve, Sighted sub, Sank Same! - Remember Pearl Harbor! The gun that did it is at the Minnesota Statehouse , as most ofthe crew were from that State.
Recorded this back in 1991.

USS Kearny - On October 17, 1941, the German U-boat U-568 torpedoed and damaged the USS Kearny, killing 11 sailors and injuring 22.
USS Reuben James - On October 31, 1941, the German U-boat U-552 torpedoed and sank the USS Reuben James, killing 115 crew members. The USS Reuben James was the first US warship to be sunk by enemy action in World War II.
I was his Best Man when he got married. I heard her speak English for the first time during the visit. Other memories flooded back. He was like Dick Winters from Band of Brothers: cool, calm, always made the right deccision. Me, I have no idea who my character would have been. I was just a good Platoon Leader who knew his job. Our CO was like Captain Sobel, he couldn't read a map to save his life.
Gettysburg is a special place, have been there a few times. My kids freaked out, our hotel room was a stone's throw from the cemetary.
There are LOTS of youtube channels that cover WWII in ways I’ve never before experienced. It’s excellent and fascinating. The Operations Room is one of at least a dozen I follow.
. . .
Excellent post and video.
To this day, know where family members were on that day- particularly on an escort submarine to the USS Enterprise laying outside Pearl— they both got the “this is no drill” warning on encrypted channels. What a day. Went right out on patrol after refuel in a couple of days— and started sinking jap vessels (aside from the ones they shot at during October 1941 where their patrol orders were weapons free against hostile vessels. All true. They knew what was coming.
Thanks,dfwgator!
I subbed this movie https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0035533/
And it is a very interesting story of Japanese propaganda. The model and recreation of the attack was so good that the US thought they had live cameras there for a while.
My dad’s parents were stationed in the Canal Zone on December 7th. I can remember them talking about it a lot. Grandaddy spent the day and night in the control tower. Grandmother organized all the wives and commandeered all the dark fabric availiable. They sewed blackout curtains and had them all up by early evening. Grandmother was a force to be reckoned with. My parents were deployed there in early ‘42. My sister was born there December 7, 1942. Dependents were returned stateside shortly there after.
