Yes, we ate that. And its cousin, s—- on a shingle.
I couldn’t eat SOS; just looking at it made me gag.

Mom’s and Grandma’s were both very biscuity. Still had some spring in them but a bit of a crust. They were oh so good!
I believe that was what Grandma served for dessert on their first date. Had dinner at the house and went to the dance hall after that.

PA Dutch Pot Pie (boiled) is REAL Pot Pie. (Lots of Mayo...)
Baked is just OK.
Neither of mine either.
One served things like large stiff black chip things that she called pancakes (along with one of step-grandpas suckers burned in an old refrigerator) or a bowl of 25% water, %25 melted potato paste, and 50% half dissolved potato nuggets (which is a delightful accompaniment with a botulism daring venison sausage made in a sweat sock and paired with a bread yeast beet wine).
The other was a chef and I associate her with every meal being a fine dining experience including things like duck with perfectly crispy skin and fancy European style pastries and other baked goods.
Starting around Halloween and going through New Years it seems that every writer has to put out at least one cooking article.
Unfortunately there is a trend to make everything “modern” and “southern” where modern means Mexican and southern is code for cheap questionable ingredients and bad techniques. Most of these dishes are somewhat safer versions of the terrible garbage that would have come from a kitchen in which the first grandparents would have worked but with an avocado on it.
Somewhere between chasing stupid trends and apparently growing up in a home where tendies and microwaved mac were normal, the average American doesnt realize that they are actually selecting slightly elevated trash rather than recognizing and preparing proper food that one could proudly offer to guests.
“these dishes”=related to those in the many articles Im referring to, not necessarily those suggested here
My only living grandmother was Scottish. Her list
Boiled Potatoes
Boiled Meat of some sort
Spices were for rich people
The end.
“I just remember summer squash casserole and ox-tail soup (German grandma). Yuck!”
That sounds like a feast compared to what my Scottish grandma made.

I forgot about boiled potatoes. We had those a lot. Love them.
Mine did, she grew up in Arizona. My dad was always excited by seeing a good avocado in the grocery store in the 70’s and 80’s. Now they are ubiquitous.
Upper Midwest and very rural for mine.
My grandmother had never even heard of many of these concoctions. Or a slow-cooker.
Were they hard to peel ?🤪
No but they lost their appeal eventually.
Thank you, thank you!
I’ll be here all through next week ... try the veal ... and the turkey.
