In one of my first college classes a professor from France taught that all humor is based on some kind of hostility toward a target. She said Jerry Lewis flailing his arms and legs to move across the room was based on victims of spastic muscle signals. Polish jokes or other nationality humor at someone’s expense were a way to show resentment of immigrants competing in the culture. The ethnic and racial jokes reflected a feeling of superiority to others and a safe way to attack them. The mother-in-law versus son-in-law reflected a commonly dysfunctional relationship.

I think she was right.

It’s never a bad time for ethnic jokes. I remember the old edition of mad magazine with the titled remember when foreigners were funny?

I’ll bet whoever of the Trump Team was that hired this comedian has gotten an earful from Trump or Lara Trump.
Yes. he made lemonade out of what could have been a very sour lemon, but he shouldn’t have had to do that.
Other, less nimble, less creative politicians would have been filled by that bump in the road. Luckily, President Biden chose to throw his 2 cents in, only to have the coins shot right back to him. Perfect, imperfect timing!

The more I think about it the more I’m convinced the Whatshisname comedian
knew the Puerto Rican garbage joke would cause problems-——

And was even told “no ethnic jokes.”

But he is a rank opportunist and wasnt going to waste
his brief moment in the sun to get his name out there.

I don't think all humor is based on hostility to a target. Some humor is based on or the result of shock/surprise.

Plus some humor is based on the following:

Absurdity and Nonsense: Playing with illogical or nonsensical ideas, as seen in absurdist comedy or wordplay.

Incongruity: Contrasts with what the audience expected.

Playfulness and Wit: Some jokes are just clever, like puns or playful banter.

Self-Deprecation: Making light of oneself or one's own quirks, which can be relatable and funny--think Rodney Dangerfield.

Situational and Observational Humor: Observing the funny side of everyday life, like awkward moments or cultural quirks.

Good examples of exceptions.

Test it out. Try targeting your humor innocently on a protected group. Notice only men can be the butt of humor in all TV ads.

You may be right about puns.
Although like the moisture in a snake’s eyes they are the lowest form of humor.

Dr. Jordan Peterson talked about comedy in one of his recent episodes. I can’t find it right now but here is a condensed version of what he said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNRmEaw3Vek

The comedian's ill-timed cultural ethnic jokes, targeting the Black and Puerto Rican cultures, were all in very poor taste.

Who was the so-called comedian? Who was responsible for having him on stage? Trump? Was he a democrat plant?

I do find it weird that events like these feel the need to open with entertainment. Kamala has had several events open with ‘entertainers.’ It seems people are expected to have short attention spans lately.

If the election is a repeat of 2020, and Trump loses the election by 46,000 in three states, this comedian will be to blame. And Trump will be to blame for allowing any type of comedian to be at the rally.

Like others here I like Alveda King. That said, it was not an ethic joke.

Just watched it. Love it, love Peterson. I agree with every word he said about comedy.

Comedy's natural truthfulness is one of the reasons why those on the Left are humorless. They can't handle the truth.;-)
