The people who want to do good things to elevate human knowledge and achievement are always going to come up against others, and politics is one of those things they’ll use as a club to get their way and to support those they view as better than others. By the way, I should have added that Bezos was lobbying the FAA behind the scenes to obstruct SpaceX, and it wasn’t the first time. He’s just a slimy little weasel. If he was so confident of his own company’s capabilities he wouldn’t be trying to throw sand into the gears of his primary (and vastly superior) competitor. I can’t say enough bad about him.

Is that why the BE-4U's that power the first stage of ULA's Vulcan have worked perfectly for both flights? Ok. SpaceX is kicking everyones ass in this industry. You folks seem to treat this technology like it can be done easily. Me personally, I see two USA based companies doing work that is pioneering an industry that will be commonplace long after we have expired in this life. Working in space and working on the surface of the Moon and Mars right now is just like Christopher Columbus setting off into unknown territories. Its inevitable. It HAS to happen eventually. Turns out that two men with the balls and resources and dreams to try to do it are Musk and Bezos. Which is a hell of a lot more inspiring than seeing armchair astronauts here criticizing it all.

Theres more than a few SpaceX employees at Blue. I suspect that the opposite is true for SpaceX. This isn't about SpaceX -vs- Blue Origin folks. Not about Musk -vs- Bezos. Not about liberal -vs- conservative. THIS IS ABOUT SPACE TRAVEL. I love to watch all players in this infancy industry. Its fascinating. The fact that its real...makes it magical. Fck the critics. Fck em all.

OK, Blue Origin might be a fine subcontractor on a critical subsystem, but as long as Bezos is behind it it will never compete with the likes of SpaceX. There is already a significant track record for both, and Blue Origin can’t even see SpaceX from where they are. SpaceX also builds revolutionary rocket engines, but it does a thousand and one other things equally as well.

The disparity in success and reliability between SpaceX and, well, everyone else has grown so large that it puts NASA in a difficult position. They want to have at least two viable competitors for obvious reasons, but everyone else keeps tripping over their own feet, causing NASA to become more dependent upon SpaceX. At some point, it no longer makes any sense to keep doling out money to the likes of Blue Origin, in a form of corporate affirmative action, when it returns little of value. And even the “big boys”, ULA and Boeing, are on the razor’s edge of deserving the same question.

It’s getting to the point where it might make more sense to seek the desired redundancy by speeding up the development of alternative vehicles WITHIN SpaceX, such as Starship, rather than continuing to hope that the other companies ever get their acts together.

Let’s be blunt: For all intents and purposes, NASA IS SpaceX. Without them, NASA is just another regulatory agency.

I’ve had my wiring chewed on a 2022. My view is, rodents have been on the Earth for millions of years, automobiles for fewer than 200. There’s simply no excuse for unprotected wiring in vehicles which will, at least from time to time, be outdoors, or in garages where rodents have relatively little access or human supervision.

If you're referring to the Vulcan/Centaur launch, the BE-4 engines worked just fine. The burnout was on an SRB.

Yeah, the USSR had some of Von Braun's engineers, we had all the others and we had Von Braun. They captured some V-2 engines, we had the engine's designer. The first photo taken in space was obtained using an enhanced V-2 -- in 1946. ;^)

Rodents chewing wiring. That could be a whole separate topic. You know why rodents chew wiring? At some point a lot of wire insulation got made from a soy based material instead of petroleum. The stuff is edible...and mice eat anything...so go figure.
