“Lacks cheese, don’t think it has onions, and it could use a more exciting sauce.”
Your review nails it.
I’ve had bad Philly cheese steaks too.
They make it bad it can be really messed up.
Alright, I’ll keep trying.
If both are on the same menu, I’ll always go for the cheesesteak.
If both were on the same menu, maybe neither would be good.
You know what I mean.
why bless your little heart. :)
New Orleans roast beef po boys although usually when I am there I focus on seafood. But they have no shortage of hole in the wall places that make a great sloppy good roast beef po boy.
I’d prefer the Italian Beef.
“Try toasting the inside of the bun first by buttering each half and grilling it til it’s golden brown, then adding the meat and serve with au jus. Makes it even yummier.”
I add come cheddar cheese too. you have to make sure the au jus stays really hot so it melts the cheese when you dip it.
AND the roast lamb dip was fantastic!
Grew up in the Chicago burbs and started eating Chicago French Dip 60 years ago.
Best sandwich EVER!
Actually, made some several months ago and have a bit in my freezer.
Lunch tomorrow!
Prime Rib French Dip from the Cafe Milano at the Peppermill in Reno does it for us...
My son and I ate at “Philippe the Original” in April before going to a Dodgers game. We didn’t get a cup of au jus. Instead we had the preparer do a “double dip” where she dipped the top bread into au jus and dipped the bottom bread into au jus. We both wished we had a cup of au jus for additional dipping. It was OK, but nothing particularly special. If you go on a Dodgers home game day, you better wear some Dodgers gear!
Yes. Philippe’s was always very good.
I say was only because I haven’t gone there in years. I assume it’s still good.
Back in the late 1960s, the Riviera had the best French Dip Sandwiches...
With mash potatoes and gravy, it cost about one dollar...
Liked staying there for that and Riviera’s penny, nickel, & dime craps...
My mouth is watering so bad after reading that article!

I haven't been to Philippe's since the late 1960s but I remember the French Dip sandwiches being very good. I think that's where the French Dip sandwich was invented.
Well the only choice here in Phoenix is Houston’s. $26 for the sandwich. No doubt it’s good. Have to try it sometime but it’s not real close. Arby’s is about 10 min away, 7 bucks.
I’m sure no comparison. I wonder how making it with a baguette and take out boars head would be.
Corse then I have to figure out how to do the dipping sauce. Dang.
Make it with Better than boullion?
I hate soggy bread.
"Au jus" is not a thing. "Jus" is the French word for "juice." "Au" is the French word for "with." "Au jus" means "with juice." It would make no sense to say, "I'll have that with au jus." One would instead say, "I'll have that au jus." There, I feel better now. :-)
