Greenville, from what I’ve seen on realtor.com is quite an expensive place, most especially concerning centrally located new apartments.
I’d only relocate there for a job that pays well enough.
I never got to explore Greensville, but it looked like an OK southern town when passing through on a Greyhound bus.
If you are 60 and older, state colleges are tuition free.
Yes, Clemson, USC
Check out TR (Travelers Rest) - kinda redneck, but the main drag has been yuppifying. Some nice, quiet established neighborhoods nearby around Furman University, but probably more fancy contemporary homes on the other side of town. Downtown keeps getting better and better.
“The UNC Greenville is a school of massive drunkards”
“Western Carolina— the Pirates.”
??
Never heard of a UNC Greenville. There is an East Carolina University in Greenville which actually is the Pirates. I doubt there are many pirates in Western Carolina. LOL
I think they are referring to Greenville SC not NC.
Funny but true story, when Jim Valvano first took the NC State basketball job in 1980, he was asked to speak to a meeting of the Wolfpack Club in Greenville. He misunderstood and showed up in Greenville, SC instead of NC. He told that story many times and yes it’s way funnier to hear him tell it. :D
Know who ECU is— the Pirates— and they are whom was talking about. Commode hugging drunks- fraternities pale in comparison.
Meant ECU. As to knowing inside NC and VA connections—got generations of heritage to provide provenance. As in, since the Bermuda Hundred. But anyway generally enjoy your posts. And Greenville ECU environs is filled with commode hugging drunks. Any trooper will tell you.
Ok my bad. Clemson isn’t so bad either- lot of colleagues from there, some retired to NC to fly fish.
Got it- visceral reaction to the NC greenville still applies. Knew some rocknrollers from Spartanburg back when ages ago. Trey Gowdy was federal prosecutor in Anderson, SC about 30 mi SW of Greenville.
East Carolina— yep, compass on the fritz. Western Carolina is where Emmy Lou Harris went to art school iirc, before being discovered by Dr. John Starling (rip) when she came back to Montgomery,AL (The Seldom Scene featured her in early days). Starling’s ex, Fayssoux Starling/mclean lives around Spartanburg. Been to both “Carolinas” many times and App State too. Apologies thanks for the catch.
Generally like your posts— but you know very little on the level of NC and VA as my family does (in the who’s who dept and in the heritage since 1700’s). Fwiw- and nowadays slim to nothing to the average jamoke.
ECU is what I meant UNC Greensboro is often one i mix up with ECU for some reason. Probably Emmy Lou Harris went to UNCG art school long ago. Lot of musical connections in these different schools- clogs memory apparently.
Jesse Helms passed away? And then it steamrolled downhill. Tobacco knows no party and pays off all kinds of lib leftie causes as long a people keep smoking, and chain smoking at that!!
I grew up in Greensboro and was in a fraternity at UNC-G
Thank you! Looking to other opportunities to look at.
We are Southern born and are in shock at being inundated with people from the north who don’t share our values and are only looking for warmer weather in a place they can screw up as badly as they destroyed their former homes.
“East Carolina— yep, compass on the fritz.”
LOL, as you can imagine, some errors can get you in trouble round these parts. :) BTW West Carolina are the Catamounts.
I also regularly hear the North Carolina Wolfpack or things like that.
Now that is cleared up, how do you say “Beaufort”? HAHAHA
Parris Island, SC the town there— why, it’s BEW-fərt. And the NC one-— isn’t. Beau=Bow like in Beauregard (francais for “good view” or “good look”. That would have to get right having spent a good chunk of time on the SC coast moons ago.
See: The Great Santini (written by an old friend’s uncle btw- the book, also wrote Prince of Tides, and Lords of Discipline, and Conrack in re: Daufuskie Island). Swear that Robert Duvall can/could play any part (from Stalin to Robt. E. Lee, to USMC Col. fighter jock to yes— his first role as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. Phenomenal— he even played Adolf Eichmann i think because he wanted to go to Argentina where they filmed it, and learn/do Tango dancing!).
Digress- but fun doing so.
…lived in and around it all my life…
…grew up out in the country, bought my first home downtown on “the road”(yup, I was a “Roady”), moved out to the burbs to raise the kids and have been back out in the “country” on our little hobby farm for the past 20+ years…
…the burbs have now surrounded us🤦♂️…
…I’ve traveled all over the country and and been half way around the world..
…reckon I’ll just stick it out around here til the end…
…it’s got its plus’s and minus’s but it’ll have to do…
Demographic data and election data for every county in the country, and much more.
Greenville County, SC demographic data
You can even get data at the census tract level, which allows you to focus not just on a county or an entire city, but down to the neighborhood level.
…Boo-fert…🤣
If you like hippies, yuppies and leftists, then downtown Greenville is for you. Greenville spawned Jesse Jackson.
You’ll find a more genuine southern experience in nearby communities like Simpsonville, Anderson and Travelers Rest. Pickens County birthed Shoeless Joe Jackson.
