I can hear it now. Kamala: JD Vance, if elected, will be taking pot shots at Hatfields from the Naval Observatory! Talk about your endless wars. No wonder they left WV for Ohio. Trump is a McCoy sympathizer!
But Jim Vance was the Uncle of Devil Anse who was a Hatfield, so wouldn’t that make Jim Vance a Hatfield?
There were good people on both sides;-) In the hills, everybody is related in someway, I think, due to limited gene pool. According to Jack Crabb in Little Big Man (the book; non-fiction but compelling story made into a movie), the same applied to the Cheyenne with whom he lived.
It’s the Hatfields who called Jim Vance “crazy Vance” and the McCoys who had good things to say about him. Might be because he was either neutral or partial to the McCoys, they didn’t care for him.
Reading this,it’s very complicated and don’t know if it’s the truth, (claims to be) “Jim’s sister, Nancy, married Ephraim Hatfield in Logan County, WV, and they produced Anderson, now called “Devil Anse.””
So then I guess he WAS a McCoy. ?

Makes sense. The feud started with Devil Anse after the war, and got worse with Cap. So why shouldn’t two neighbors marry their children together. I guess feud party identification is patrilineal.
Never been in a feud, though I do have issues with my niece and her family. No bloodshed, though.
Got to take issue with the author mischaracterizing Hillbilly Elegy as “slandering” Vance’s kin. His grandmother was one of the heroes of the story, and she was also deeply religious, and also used language that would shock a sailor. The author’s grandmother would never curse like that, but she was not Vance’s grandmother. BFD. She also didn’t rescue Vance from a life of drug use, drunkenness and poverty, towards which he was heading, and make sure he got a real education. JD’s grandmother did. Slander? I don’t think so. He didn’t “slander” his mother, either, who on the one hand was a drug addict, on the other hand bravely kicked her abusive husband out the door after setting him on fire to make sure he never came back, and raised two children on her own while going to nursing school, and eventually got herself clean of the drugs she was addicted to. These are not “slanders”. They’re true portraits of people on the bottom rungs struggling to overcome.
His well-documented critique of JD’s bad history, however, and presentation of the real facts, was excellent.
So IS JD Vance related to the McCoys, do you think?
Exactly, only he doesn’t know beans about his family’s history. Next we’ll be discovering that Walz is a Hatfield! And he carried weapons in war in Kentucky and West Virginia, nailing McCoys. LOL.
