IMO they should not let the merger go through.
I am told my local Albertson’s will be changed to a Piggly Wiggly. They closed their stores in California many years ago, but it appears C&S owns that chain so maybe they are coming back.
The better damn well NOT.
Every store in my county in Southern Oregon ( Josephine) will be closed by this merger. I hope they’re able to stop it!
This comes after Albertsons acquired Safeway. Monopoly in retail groceries indeed.
Looks like a couple of them in this area are within 2 or 3 miles of a new HEB, so that makes sense.
But another one of them is the “Jewish Tom Thumb” which is really nice and known for its Kosher selection. Looks like they may be keeping their other Kosher location further south.
It does look like they are keeping some marginal Albersons locations that they kept when they pulled back in DFW some years ago and closed their nicest stores.
At this point, what difference would that make?
Read later, although we’ve already lost Albertsons.
All of the Phoenix AZ Safeway store offloads are in the crappiest neighborhoods.
This merger would be an absolute disaster for the consumer, especially in California where these two chains control easily 80% or more of the supermarkets. Is it not strange that while several states are actively opposing this merger, that Gruesome Newsom has been sitting quietly by saying and doing nothing, especially since these are by far the two largest supermarkets in CA?
Kroger already has announced the locations of the stores they would be selling to C&S, which is primarily a wholesale supplier to smaller supermarkets. In my area, one is an Albertson’s which is across the street from a Kroger’s Ralphs, and the second one is a Vons which is owned by Albertson’s. Both facilities are the oldest supermarkets in the area.
Does anyone know CHINA'S involvement in Kroger? I smell a RAT, SUM TING WONG.
Exactly.
Fry’s (Kroger) is cheaper than Safeway most of the time. I expect the merger stores to adopt Safeway pricing.
Two are in my town, not too far from each other - Vons and Vons Pavilion.
Not sure if the stores will close permanently or be re-branded, hopefully they won’t close. There is a lot of building going on around here - mandated apartments, thousands of them, and we’re gonna need those supermarkets.
The two Safeways left in Indianapolis are in the Hood - I liked Safeway before Albertson’s screwed them up.
A previous thread on the topic said they would still be smaller than Walmart. I assumed that was only the grocery division but I’m not sure.
Albertson’s bought safeway recently….
I was in an Albertsons recently and didn’t care for it.
It will reduce competition for sure, especially in some towns/areas where the two previously were the main players, but it’s not correct to say that the combined entity will have a “monopoly on food.” Multiple analysts have said the merged companies will be about 13 percent of the U.S. grocery market. Thirteen percent ain’t a monopoly.
