However, if there’s a criminal charge against him somewhere (or he owes taxes) then that might be a valid reason for what happened.

If the seizure is not legit then I would hope Ritter’s lawyers will deal with it.
Myself, I suspect he’s got some charges and indictments coming quite soon.

Did Ritter self disclose on his passport application that he was a registered child sex offender so it could get the appropriate child sex offender stamp as required by law?
Did Ritter notify his local sex offender registry at least 21 days in advance that he was planning to travel internationally as required by law?
Did Ritter know that by law, Russia forbids registered sex offenders from entering their country?
Interesting. That means there is a substantial reason for seizing Ritter’s passport.
