His own insurance will cover the rental car the same as his own car. That’s why it’s a waste of money to let the rental companies talk you into taking out insurance for their rental.

Yes, that is true if you have insurance on your own autos. However, it is still a pain in the a$$.
That vehicle is totaled. I guarantee his insurance rates will go up because of it. Probably for good reason.
IF you use the rental car insurance you are covered with no hassle to you. When I travel on business, my company always tells us to deny the insurance because we are covered under the corporate policy. When I travel on my own dime, I get the insurance from the rental car company. ESPECIALLY, IF I AM IN ANOTHER COUNTRY.
