Through personal and professional experience, the late psychiatrist and author M. Scott Peck, wrote of evil as a result of malignant narcissism. He also regarded evil though as a spiritual force and demonic possession as real. Scott's estimation seems correct: human evil and mental illness are common, while demonic possession is rare.
Having been raised Catholic, much of the exorcism protocol you describe sounds familiar. The average theology student of catechism, focused on memorizing (not analyzing) prayers such as The Apostles Creed is not likely to know of it, but if one digs deeper, it’s all there.
The name Malachi Martin is definitely familiar.
I used to hear him as a radio guest on the Art Bell talk shows. Even back before the 1991 Jeffrey Dahmer trials,
Fr. Martin was warning about a gay takeover of the people surrounding The Pope, and also in most Jesuit schools.
What I was thinking.
As to bug eaters. R. M. Renfield comes to mind.
Wrong. If you read about exorcisms, it may take years.
Were any of the possessed atheists?
Possession isn’t limited to just Catholics. It’s common for other religions to bring in a Catholic exorcist.
Again this was before my time but I have seen the film (not for a while though)
