Absolutely preposterous fecal garbage. The article is trash, and you posting it here is trash. How’s that for “verbal abuse”? This isn’t DU and this isn’t a place for the weak to be mollycoddled. I’ve never seen such a nonsense list in my existence on this planet.

Raising your voice is “verbal abuse”? A “harsh tone”? Damn man anyone who can’t handle such things has no business being alive simply by Darwinian survival of the fittest. Maybe individuals who are harmed by the merest piffle aren’t MEANT to survive, let alone be happy or healthy.

I wonder if “negative predictions” isn’t “Don’t touch the stove because you’ll burn yourself” but is more “You never listen! You’ll grow up just like your cousin - getting into trouble and end up in prison.”

You seem to be one of the few on this thread wiling to get the point of the article. I agree; they are not talking about a mild, occasional rebuke; but a chronic pattern of screaming, degrading, gaslighting or bullying with words.

“Any derogatory language
Belittling
Blaming
Criticizing
Demeaning
Disrespecting
Humiliating
Insulting
Intimidating
Making negative comparisons
Making negative predictions
Name-calling
Putting-down
Ridiculing
Scapegoating
Scolding
Shaming
Shouting
Swearing
Teasing
Threatening
Yelling”

What a retarded little woke article that is. What’s next, kid takes a honking crap in the middle of the living room carpet and the parents should only be allowed to say, “Gosh, Johnny, I hope next time you can make it to the bathroom”??

You seem to have gotten over it, rlmorel! Very entertaining story told in hindsight. At the time, I imageine, not so much. The real story is how did it affect your childrearing? And you don’t have to answer.

Have you ever considered that an overabundance of harsh experiences in your childhood may be preventing you from loving and being loved where and how it actually counts? Your tell-tale denunication doth protest too much.

“Wake up, it’s 9:00”, and “When are you going to clean up your room?” should be recognized as murder-death-kill level offenses.

LOL! Our mom would tiptoe into our rooms to get us up and switch on a transistor radio at top volume. Does this mean she made the list?!

You should not make your kids feel hated.

Discipline should be discipline, not the expression of your rage.

Spanking is still legal. Definitions vary from state to state. In California iirc you can’t raise a welt. Which is an ok standard with me.

Raising one's voice at a child or using a harsh tone were among the most common behaviors associated with CVA

Really? Can't have a harsh tone or raise our voices to teach our children? I guarantee you that if children are allowed t to do things without parents showing extreme disapproval then those smae children are going to do something that one day will be met with a lot more than a raised voice and a harsh tone.

"Primary prevention of CVA using trauma-informed approaches must include adult training on the importance of safety, support, and nurturance during verbal communication with children."

This is the crux of the biscuit. Training for parents. I imagine they'll start out with voluntary attendance. Eventually mandatory for anyone who wants children. And I can guess what they'll tell parents. "If you tell your child men can't have babies that's child abuse." They have an acronym that's catchy. They have a list so long that almost any verbal interaction can be regarded as abuse, if you have an evil mind. And they've tied it to traditional child abuse by making it a subtype of child abuse. No one will want to have children with this kind of thing hanging over their heads. Children will start suing their parents.

The vacuum cleaner was my mom’s preferred sleep deprivation device in the morning. And then she would tell the dog to bark at me. It was 100% effective.

Most all of psychology is left-wing horse crap. Pure garbage and is more damaging to people than anything. Like it’s been mentioned before, get a motorcycle, and you’ll have your therapy.
That being said, I’ve got children. 1 of the kids, I can tell him over and over again not to do something and he will. I can tell punish, holler and he’ll still do it and reap the consequences. Another one of my kids, I can practically look at him angrily, and he’ll settle right down, quick fast and in a hurry.
Pay attention to your kids. Don’t pay attention to psychologists. They’re in it for the money mostly.

Bingo. Exactly right.

In a Christian home, none of those tactics should be seen except maybe scolding and shaming. The rest are no-brainers.

Scolding, though (depending on definition), has to happen if we want our kids to know right from wrong. Shaming, less so, but useful. I think if a kid acts up at Thanksgiving dinner, and Dad sends him to his room, that would be shaming, and maybe appropriate.

Psychobabble Today got a few things right. My grandmother knew those things back a hundred years ago.

Thank you for sharing! Your recollections brought me to some dear memories from that time in my own life.

We have our first grandchild coming next month and we were discussing reprimanding children today with some friends. We joked that we’ll have to learn all the new thinking or we’ll end up in jail. Every one of our friends recalled the wooden spoon, the belt, the switch or the hand and how we all managed to survive and even learn from it.

It’s quite obvious the kinder, gentler parenting isn’t working. I’m thankful our kids aren’t into “reasoning” with infants. This might be due to one being a teacher and seeing the worst of parenting on a daily basis.

That is the slope these demo-commies glide down. Just look back at ‘we just want to be allowed to love who we want’ to ‘we just want the right to marry’ to ‘You have to celebrate our marriage or you’re a phobic hater’ to ......

My Dad did one thing that was Childhood Verbal Abuse.

He would call me or my siblings "knuckle headed idiots" if we didn't live up to his standards when we were doing our chores.   If I didn't hoe the garden the way he wanted it done, I was a knuckle headed idiot.

A kid like me had no problem living down to his low expectations.   I believe the fact that I was able to marry a breathtakingly beautiful wife who saw my abilities was what got me over the stigma.

Please stop running towards the street, there’s a car coming.

I remember one time when my Dad yelled at a car. We lived right across the street from a school as it happened, and some kid came roaring by. My dad was standing on the porch, and yelled "SLOW DOWN!" ... the "kid" ( maybe 18 ) heard it and looked querulously, I would say, over at my dad ... but he did slow down!
