Yes, people make choices in life.

She has chosen to live and work in one of the most expensive cities in America.

If that works for her, fine. We are all about people having free choices about how to live their lives.

But if it doesn’t work for her, then as a mature adult, making responsible decisions about her life, she should do something about it.

At the very least, she needs a personal household budget. But also, needs to see where her money is going, and can she cut expenses. All of us do this in one way or another.

Does she live in that expensive neighborhood she works in? While the Bay Area is expensive, there are cheaper neighborhoods within the area, as is true in all of our hometowns.

Does she have, or willing to have, a roommate to share expenses?

Does she go to places like Starbucks a lot?

Does she love the Bay Area so much, that she is willing to make the financial sacrifices to live there, instead of somewhere with a lower cost of living?

A mature responsible adult will consider these sorts of things, and others, as she plans her professional and personal life.

I won’t repeat some of the good points other posters have made.
Missing in these stories is just exactly where this borrowed money was spent. I do not believe that it was all for tuition and books. She used this borrowed money to live on, rent food car. Borrowing money to do anything but pay for tuition and books is very foolish.

There are number of ways to get around having to use borrowed money for day-to-day living expenses. She should have gone to a cheaper school in a cheaper area to live and then she should have set up practice in a less insanely expensive city.

Also she should have done a little math before she got into all this. Did she think that half a million dollars was going to be easy to pay off when she borrowed it? And then somehow found out it wasn’t?

I’m tired of stupid people making stupid decisions and expecting responsible people who have sacrificed to cover their butts.

Dental school is the worst value in the student loan racket. The whole issue can be resolved overnight though by eliminating the prohibition on discharging student loans in bankruptcy. As simple as that.

Additionally, she can “stay current” until the end of her natural life merely by paying $5/month. Borrowing might be a pain or impossible, but people need to get out of the whole debt based money system anyways.

So, leave Frisco yah TWOT. It is ~40% more expensive that 95% of the rest of the country.

Don’t wanna move? Then, piss off.

I think you're onto something.

We get the gov $$ for taking in 'immigrants' and we go for the trifecta making it a minority owned woman business.

Which one of us is going to identify as the minority woman?

I'm thinking it should be you because (a) it's my idea and; (b) you'd probably be better at it. I'm old, cranky and a "get off my lawn" kinda guy. Don't think I'd be believable.

She went to an elite dental school in order to join an elite dental office in upscale S.F

As long as she doesn’t screw it up she is set for life.

“get off my lawn” kinda guy”

I’ll stack up my posts where I
have actually posted “get off my lawn” to yours.

I can see we may have hit an unanticipated glitch in the plan.
Seems to be a recurring theme for me.
A great idea ... all the parts and pieces coming together.

I was raising pet rocks long before they became popular.
I was about to make my move .. and the bottom fell out of the market. Dropped like a .... well ...you know
Some things are just not meant to be ...

I tried identifying as a wealthy, international playboy ..
but...the guy at the bank called the police .... it didn’t work out very well.

Looks like we may have to just box this idea up ..

So ........... get off my lawn

Then, if she wanted to borrow less money she should have gone to a different dental college.

Or, if a less expensive college was not available, then she had the option of pursuing a different profession. She was not coerced into this.

Were I to have this conversation with her, I would ask this: “Did you not determine the burden of repaying this loan before you took it out? If you say you did not, I am obliged to point out to you that you are either a liar or stupid, or more likely, both.”

My first year of Med School they passed the Federal Guaranteed Student Loan and tuition double every year since then.

Graduated in 84 from Med school with about $16,000 dollars in debt.

You let the government control things, you get screwed major.

If I was a kid now I’d train to be an electrician!

Where does it cost $470K to get a dental degree?

Suspect she borrowed money to live on as well as tuition, and she lived quite well instead of scrimping.
