I like the one at a time suggestions and the brief synopsis. But I need to make sure I don’t read too many posts that others make on a movie that I haven’t seen before.

“I loved that movie, and who would have thought that the sister was actually his mother that married the uncle and ended up killing the butler!?”

Check out the 1945 MGM film "The Picture of Dorian Gray." It was intended as a Hurd Hatfield vehicle, Hatfield being MGM's latest pretty boy. But George Sanders walks off with the film.

In every scene with Hatfield, Sanders executes a bit of business, usually with his hands, that distracts the viewer from Hatfield. Sanders steals these scenes, and poor Hatfield had no idea that Sanders was out-acting him.

Sanders tried these bits in a film with Olivier, but Larry was wise to him and counteracted with his own little bits of stage biusiness.

Daphne Du Maurier was a hot writer in the 1930s and 40s.

The station that clears that network it in my market is a low power tv station. I’m almost to the edge of their reception area. Thus weather can affect reception. Thunderstorms are not surprising as low power stations have paper thin signals to begin with and thunderstorms affect the atmospherics. But windy days for some reason also impacts reception. But on the days of calm weather, some great movies air across that network.

Just as in life, reality is not what you’re led to believe.
TY for your reply.

I thought Sanders upstaged Robert Taylor in Ivanhoe as De Bois-Guilbert. I found Taylor to be stiff as the title character.

It’s watching movies like this which keeps us longing
for access to the classics. Many are so much better than
the garbage turned out today.

BTW, your mom has very good taste in movies.

Thanks for your reply.

My Dad was a projectionist. He had two 16mm projectors and a huge movie screen that took up a whole wall of the living room. Sound was pumped through two Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater Speakers which were the size of DISHWASHERS. We had “Movie Club” every Friday night. All the neighbors would contribute to the cost of the 16mm print, Mom would make popcorn, and we would watch the Classics, long before the invention of VHS or Cable TV. Here are a few of our favorites:

Laurel and Hardy
All the Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald Flicks
Rebecca
The Russians are Coming
It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
2001 A Space Odyssy
Balalaika
Phantom of the Opera (Nelson Eddy version)
Casablanca
The African Queen
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Zhivago
How The West Was Won
Gone With The Wind
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep
To Have and Have Not

(There were a lot more.)

((((He was unable to obtain any Disney movies, because they were under strict control. But maybe that was for the best)))

The entire gathering of neighbors to watch movies is a great idea. Fun on a Friday? night, bonding with the neighborhood.
In the small Texas town we lived, they would gather each month
on a Saturday night and watch movies being projeced on the blank brick wall of a building. Bring your own seating, quilt
or whatever. Then, for some reason shortly after we moved into town, these gatherings ceased.

As to the many movies you listed. Some are now on the list or
soon will be. Doubtful we’ll ever be given the opportunity for Gone With The Wind and several others. The fists hold tight onto those and the copyrights. Personal favorites here are the musicals with Grable, Horne, Miranda. The same
fist holding holds true for these as well. Certainly a ‘good thing’ the industry was so productive during that era. Still LOTS of others to choose from.

That sounds awesome...but for a small Texas town neighborliness seems like a normal thing.

We grew up in URBAN BOSTON! LOL! :-)

That’s probably how Dad was able to get such good flicks, as he worked downtown in the Theater District. They weren’t cheap though.
