Rich Men North of Richmond

Ping to a few regulars.

I remember some of you guys were pooh poohing the idea that there was an "elite" in the northeastern part of this country. I long ago noticed that I wasn't the only one who noticed this.

This song speaks to that "elite" who have been controlling our nation since at least the civil war.

Do you have an commentary on this?

Simple answer is, it pushes the right buttons at the right time. Add another song from the early 1980s and you have a tandem that pushes the right buttons at the right time. A Countryboy Can Survive - Hank Williams Jr Rich Men North of Richmand - Oliver Anthony In my opinion, these two songs should be played back to back.

You forgot one. Johnny Paycheck's "Take this job and shove it!"

Very similar theme.

And they’ve lost 3-5 months pay in the last 2.5 years from inflation.

I wasn't "pooh poohing" that idea. I was questioning whether they were as decisive a force in 1860 as you claim. The elite isn't now what it was in its heyday, and the "elite" is spread all over the country.

The song refers to Washington DC politicians (and maybe Northern Virginia politicians), but there are plenty of Rich Men South of Richmond who agree with them. Even in 1860, Rich Men South of the Mason-Dixon Line could be troublemakers.

A lot of people miss it in the song, but he slipped in an Epstein reference.
“I wish politicians would look out for miners / And not just minors on an island somewhere”

After hearing about all the hype surrounding this tune I finally went to YouTube and watched/listened to it.

Three minutes later I thought, "are you kidding me? This sucks!"

OK, I did appreciate the hand wringing, overblown lyrics and the bit about "miners" and "minors" but IMO there just wasn't much meat to the whole thing. And you're right when you say that had the lyrics been some lefty drivel instead most who say they like this tune would have said it sucked. Because regardless of its lyrics it does rather suck.

Agree with your take on the scrunched-up facial expressions too - reminds me of those rock guys who look like they're boinking a room full of horny fashion models when they're preforming a 10 minute guitar solo. So fake. So damn put on and cringeworthy. Ugh.

When it comes to this sort of protest music I'll take Aaron Lewis's "Am I the Only One" over Oliver's tune any day and by a thousand miles.

How many songs, other than this one, have you heard that actually mention Epstein island?

I see them as the steering force of the government in the later half of the 19th century, and they continued to be that steering force, effectively till the present.

What other group had so much influence on the government?

The elite isn't now what it was in its heyday, and the "elite" is spread all over the country.

There is some truth in that, but the core is still concentrated in DC, Boston and New York.

Yes, LA, San Fran, and Chicago are all players.

The song refers to Washington DC politicians (and maybe Northern Virginia politicians), but there are plenty of Rich Men South of Richmond who agree with them.

Some truth in that. I see Kemp as being part of that clique.

Even in 1860, Rich Men South of the Mason-Dixon Line could be troublemakers.

Some truth in that, but they didn't have the ear of the ruling powers in DC.

It’s just ok. Nothing more. Why is it so groundbreaking?

Because it's giving voice to those who aren't yet woke to how the system operates. Or as Trump said in his inaugeral speech:

"For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered, but the jobs left and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs. And while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land."

It's reaching an audience that Trump hasn't reached yet.

It’s sad when someone’s obsession becomes OCD such that they find themselves seeing boogiemen behind every tree. Or maybe it’s a new derangement - NDS (Northerner Derangement Syndrome). Either way it is unfortunate - and kinda embarrassing.

Its sad when some people have blind support for the very people who are destroying the core of the nation. And those same people belittle anyone who exposes it, right? Oh, wait, thats you! LOL
