One of my favorite songs by SD, as well.
“In the night you hide from the madman
You’re longing to be
But it all comes out on the inside
Eventually”
Bad Sneakers is another favorite, and I have many more. Their music never fail to take me to a warm, sunny place, especially in winter.
Probably as close to a “love song” as you were going to get with Steely Dan, should have been a huge hit for them IMHO, one of the best pedal steel solos ever from the Skunkster

The excellent sound quality is certainly part of it. I still have a pristine copy on vinyl. It is a great LP. Technically a near masterpiece and just a pleasure to listen to. Saying anything is the greatest is a fool’s errand. Music is too subjective for that.
Throw back the little ones
And pan-fry the big ones
Use tact, poise and reason
And gently squeeze them
One of my all-time favorites.
At the time, I definitely didn’t appreciate Steely Dan. But one of my kids was listening to my ‘oldies’ and she loved them...now I’m hooked too!
Also Denny Dias’ solo in Bodhisattva is one of the best jazz guitar solos ever IMHO.
Go back, Jack, do that again.
I’m envious. Out of my range I’m afraid. Hope you’ve got a good rig to play them on. I’m running a an older Thorens TD 126 mkIII with a Jelco arm and an Ortofon Blue cartridge. I’m currently reconditioning a couple of Garrard Zero 100s that I picked up cheap at auction. Be interesting to hear how they sound.
That sounds so damn good on my system. The mix is perfect.
When they came to my theater, Donald Fagen told me I’m not welcome at his show.
No vaccine.
Oh well, there are other good musicians out there.
.. and I sang in a steely dan cover band in high school.
An intoxicated teenage fan of SD in ‘77 is not the same as an intoxicated teenage fan of SD today. Back when Aja was released, SD fans were in the moment and SD was of the moment. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is...and rightly so.
The Things I Miss The Most!
The great Larry Carlton played lead and arranged ~ half the songs on Royal Scam....sometimes called SD's "Guitar Album".
His solo on "Kid Charlemagne" is awesome...but his opening lead on "Don't Take Me Alive" is even better. He also played lead on "The Royal Scam" track and Everything You Did".
The SD catalogue (thru Gaucho) is being remastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman on "regular" vinyl, UHQR vinyl ($150), CD and 24-bit Digital Download.
The first 3 remastered albums have been released. Except for Aja and Gaucho, all remasters will be sourced from the original master tapes.
>>>Another of my favorites is “Here At The Western World”, which never made it onto an album<<<
It’s on their “Greatest Hits” album....and the album was mastered by the GREAT Robert Ludwig. Arguably, the best sounding version of those 18 tracks.
Denny Dias’ solo on “Aja” just before the Steve Gadd/Wayne Shorter dueling solos is quite awesome in its’ own right, too.
I love the Dan but to me, Countdown or Royal Scam are better albums
“Have you heard about the boom on Mizar-5?”
Brilliant example of imaginative storytelling in lyrics...’Sign In Stranger’, one of my favorite songs of all time
“Countdown” fun facts....
“My Old School” - “Daddy G” was a reference to G. Gordon Liddy’s FBI raid at their college
“ShowBiz Kids” - Rick Zeringer, as a teen just up the road from my hometown (Dayton,OH), started a band “The McCoys” and had a modest hit with “Hang On Sloopy. I saw them as the opening act at our teen club (lower level of a strip shopping center) and they stayed on stage to be the backing band for Simon & Garfunkel. Rick’s guitar was actually star of that show.
Eventually, Rick went to LA and changed his last name to “Derringer” and quickly gained a reputation as a talented session player.
Rick Derringer plays the hot slide lead on “ShowBiz Kids” and later the lead on (Katy Lied’) “Chain Lightning” for SD
