Somebody needs to throw the mermaid in a briar patch.
Didn't they go see "The Princess and the Frog"?
Or what about “Encanto”, “Reya And The Last Dragon” or “Mulan”?!
Or Moana...
Oh yeah, I forgot about that movie.
Or “Pocahontas”.
Does anyone else see the irony in remaking TLM with a black actress when 95% of black Americans can’t or won’t swim?
“Black children and their moms being able to see themselves in a Disney heroine, and that’s a powerfully admirable goal – as well as a long-overdue one...”
Right, cuz you NEVER see blacks in any roles on TV or in the movies /s
Oh there's Aladdin.
They are like the black folks who complained that they allowed one white guy to be on the Olympic basketball team.
“A lot of ink and pixels have testified to the value of Black children and their moms being able to see themselves in a Disney heroine, and that’s a powerfully admirable goal –“
So come up with one . What’s so hard about it? You’ve got the template of every Disney movie ever made. Don’t appropriate White mythology. What happens next a White male English king being played by one hell of a nasty looking black woman….? Oh….wait…
The characters don’t even look like Disney.
ALL Disney movies turned to drek when they stopped using animators to hand-draw painted cels.
The fact of the matter is there really aren’t many roles for black people that they want to play. In many movies, shows etc. they always look like ‘add ons’ rather than fit the actual scripts. There are exceptions but generally not.
I liked the cartoon movie. See no reason to remake it
“Some people apparently couldn’t handle the audacity of reinventing a cartoon character...”
I dislike it, also. The characters invented in the past were in most cases consistent with the surroundings of their stories, and were developed with an individual personality and appearance. So why reinvent it and change it for a political purpose. It’s artificial.
“Black children and their moms being able to see themselves in a Disney heroine...”
There are heroines of color in many Disney features. Of course the Princess and the Frog, Wish, Little Mermaid TV series Gabriella, X-Men Ororo Munroe, Aida on Broadway, Queen La of Opar From Legend of Tarzan, Shuri from Black Panther, and Sade.
We put too much weight on color. I’m Irish, basically, and I don’t have but one female character to root for and that was from Darby O’Gill and played by Janet Monroe, Katie O’Gill. (And Monroe is British in reality)
Why do we have to place politics in fantasy? It’s far from the truth to begin with. What color was Dumbo? Does it matter?

The only reason they remake these is to tear down anything white, and replace it.
