My wife and I made a driving trip to Virginia a while back. Drove through that part of Tennessee. On the way back, we had planned to stay one night, but instead ended up staying for 3 days. AND there is a Bucee’s on the Interstate.

Fredricksburg is also fun at Christmas time.

Frankfort, KY

The Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky is Daniel Boone’s final resting place. The views of the surrounding area from his memorial are amazing.

Frankfort is also home to four bourbon distilleries:
- Buffalo Trace Distillery
- Castle & Key Distillery
- Glenn’s Creek Distilling
- Three Boys Farm Distillery

The Buffalo Trace Distillery tour is free. Check their website to find out which adult beverage is being offered that day (limited to one per flavor per person, due to popularity and price). Visting on Blanton’s day is HIGHLY recommended, and take a teetotaler friend (or group) with you.

They also have Publix grocery stores down there! Anytime (and every time) I’m within an hour’s drive of one, I’ll go get my shopping done there. I always find things I can’t get here in the Midwest. I’ll pay the prices.

You should see NORTHEAST Tennessee! (I liked it better than Chattanooga-Cleveland, anyway.)

Do you mean the Tri-Cities area? We only made it as far as Newport and Del Rio on one trip. It was beautiful but it felt like we were too far from some important things for retirement. Even though we are healthy right now, we figured that as we get older, great health care will become more important to us. Also want to be within an hour’s drive if at all possible to a decent airport. There were a couple of other things we would be looking for, but I don’t feel like mentioning them here.

We found a wonderful lazy river called the Hiwassee and stayed in a riverfront home. Had its own dock so kayaking and tubing are options right there. We stayed in Benton, and thought Cleveland offered us some things. Not sure about the airport or health care there, but that river was just what we needed. Loved having an Amish/Mennonite Farmers Market right there.

We might be interested in another area if we could find exactly what we’re looking for. For the time being, we decided we’re not ready for a move for at least a few more years. Vacationing in Tennessee, big yes.

Nashville is a tourist trap. There is hockey if you like that.

Come south to Franklin, TN where woke dies.

ETSU is in Johnson City. It’s the big medical school of the UT system... NOT UTK(noxville), the more famous campus where the SEC football and basketball teams are from. So I did think about trying to get my folks to move down to Tri-Cities. (There is another state medical school in Memphis, and two private ones in Nashville.)

“Forget about Orlando, Disney, San Francisco, Seattle, Honolulu and Denver too”.

Those destinations have never been on my list. I look for the small out-of-the-way spots in rural southern America. Small town jazz or blue-grass festivals, with camping instead of hotels, are a lot more fun that a touristy spot where you are jammed together with people you wouldn’t like if you spent more than two minutes together.

There is far more to South Dakota than the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. A visit to Mt Rushmore at sunset is spectacular and a drive through Spearfish Canyon is breathtaking. On the way to the Black Hills Babkands National Park and the Minuteman Missle National Historic site are worth seeing. Yes, Wall Drug is a tourist trap, but it is iconic Americana. In the eastern part of South Dakota you will be surprised with Sioux Falls...gourmet restaurants, a vibrant art scene, great parks and miles of bicycle trails. A hidden gem is the National Music Museum on the campus of the University of South Dakota. This museum has a world class collection of historic musical instruments.

So that’s comforting. How far is the drive to the nearest decently sized airport. Would that be in Knoxville or Charlotte or someplace else?

Tri-Cities airport goes to Charlotte, Atlanta and Dallas several times a day, on Delta or American. That’ll connect you to pretty much anywhere. Knoxville flies direct to a couple dozen cities, and is a hub for Allegiant Air.
