I was at the Springfield VT McDonalds last Tuesday. After the lunch hour the line for the drive thru was 2 lanes wide all the way around the building. I opted to go inside. I was greeted with 4 card only kiosks and 1 cashier station with no attendant. I walked up to the cashier station and was immediately greeted, ordered 2 meals and was shown where to get a drink cup. Before we were finished pouring our drinks the order taker said “sir your order is ready” and we were out the door. Less than 5 minutes. Outside the cars never moved.

Not long after the demand for $15/hour wages. Who could have seen this coming? I’m shocked, I tell you!

I think, as they said, the organization was becoming too complex, probably too top-heavy in management. Every McDonald’s I’m in always seems busy as well.

A lot of the commenters are fixating on the retail side of things, when the issues McDonald's corporate is trying to address are much higher.

The clown is a huge corporate entity, with worldwide operations and multiple decades of operations as a publicly traded business. They are not trying to make hamburgers, they're trying to make money, and after decades of profit-seeking and growth, large public corporations eventually reach a point where they can't do both any more and likely can't do either one well. They got real estate to manage, pensions to fund, and contracts that have to be negotiated years ahead of time.

That's one reason why mass layoffs usually result in a short term stock bump, it's one of the quickest ways to a net + on the year end finances that a large mature corporation can do.

So...they choose Cardi and her WAP as their spokesperson. What could possibly go wrong?

Had MickeyDs for breakfast this morning. Loved it. Have to admit my store has to be an outlier though because it’s run by an awesome manager, the staff are mostly high school and younger adults, the place is clean, the food is hot and the customer service is on par with Chick-fil-A.

Any one remember when McDonald's hired friendly happy high school kids for their first jobs? And it was a friendly happy place to have a burger?

Yes, and kids were grateful for the experience.

Nowadays, they complain about not being able to support a family on a McDonald's wage.

BTW, my first job was at the local movie theater.

“hire a street bum”

He’d have to have a bad attitude, especially towards White folks to complete the experience.

“my store has to be an outlier”

After everything you described you better believe it’s an outlier......I’ve never been in one and experienced much of any of that....the only exception was the one on the military base where I worked....and I suspect that was the reason.

The problem is Chick Fil A (not cheap for fast food) is now the same price as a McDonalds meal. Canes the same price. In and Out is actually cheaper.

Why would you eat at McDonalds when you could arguably get what is perceived as healthier and better options?

People went to McD's for the cheapness, mainly. For some reason, they thought they could inflate their prices past their competitors for what is perceived as trash food in comparison.

Disclaimer: they are all to a degree trash food but public perception is public perception.

“Where’s my $15/hr!!!???”

LOL. My stepdaughter works part time at a McD in Japan (Ota, just south of Tokyo). Started out at $10/hour and now at $11/hour. And that’s one of the higher hourly rates at the store.

And that store is slammed. Every. Single. Day. Even with a MOS BURGER (a pretty popular chain in Japan) right nearby.

Pinging AIT, as he lives in JP and often has some useful commentary on all things Japan.

They can just offshore that part to China

I have never one time been to a McDonald’s outside of the US that isn’t jammed all hours of the day. And I usually hit them because after a week or so of the local fair, I just want something familiar and predictable.

Some of your employees who have direct contact with the customer shouldn’t be in that position: they don’t understand English, they can’t be understood and they don’t know the rules of elementary politeness.

Other than that, nothing wrong with drive thru.

Of course if Trump was in office the press would be asking about all these layoffs and what is he doing to do to fix it.

Our fake news is out of control.
