Read the book series, then watched the three seasons that when they aired, then went back and read the trilogy again.
He also wrote some of UNCLE novelettes that appeared in the Man From UNCLE digest magazine.
I liked Brak the Barbarian when I was in high school. Never read his historical stuff. I just recently picked up a copy of Mention My Name in Atlantis at a used-book store but I haven’t read it yet.
Read all three of the north and south books. I believe he wrote a western series too.
They were mini-series.
I remember mostly how horrible the actress was who played Swayzes obnoxious sister.
Also how self-consciously defiant the mixed-race Kirstie Allie romance was.
I watched the miniseries. Jonathan Franks, who play the devious Hazard brother, met his wife soap star Connie Francis on the set. Franks would gain fame playing Commander Riker on Star Trek:The Next Generation.
Allie’s character was not mixed race but she eloped with a black man. Her character was a holds no bar ardent abolitionist.
When Kirstie Alley died last year, I commented on a thread about all the marriages that took place between individuals who met during the filming of the series. Kirstie married Parker Stevenson. Genie Francis married Jonathan Frakes. Wendy Kilbourne married James Read. Terri Garber who played Ashton Main, married Christopher Martin “Chris” Hager who worked on the set. Lesley-Anne Down married Don E. FauntLeRoy, Cinematographer on the series. Francis and Frakes, Kilbourne and Read, and Down and FauntLeRoy are all still married.
May he rest in peace.
I loved that mini-series. Is it out there anywhere on Streaming services?
Way back when marriage was popular.
Frakes, not Franks.
Same here - those were good days/shows....
You really did keep up with that. Good to know - thanks.
I know. I meant the romance (marriage) was mixed-race.
Wow, married to Rachel for 71 years! How few make that incredible milestone. I’m sure they were very happy together to make it through.
I just ripped and watched “North and South,” “Love and War” and “Heaven and Hell” a couple months ago. I learned about it on the post about Kirstie Allie passing away. I thoroughly enjoyed the three seasons of the show. Mr. Jakes had a real knack for bringing history alive.
“I remember mostly how horrible the actress was who played Swayzes obnoxious sister.”
I loved watching her. She was gorgeous and could make me laugh with her instant turning on and off her Southern charm. She could twist any man around her little finger in an instant. But she got hers in the end as a whore in some Western town and then marrying some barroom guy and plotting her comeback to the old plantation back. Her acting was over the top, but I loved it. I wonder what she was like in real life.
I just watched “All About Eve” for the first time and the young Eve in the movie is a conniving, scheming, pretty bitch a lot like the girl in North and South.
I loved “The Bastard”. Great book and great mini-series.
Jonathan Frakes married Genie Francis, not Connie Francis.
